Forums - Nintendo - Wii U already hacked !!!

and i don't follow the idiocy that no pirated copies equate to a lost sale.

my pirate best friend obviously would not have purchased all 300ish games he downloaded for his ps2.  but his 0 purchased game library for his wii vs. ~15ish purchased games for his ps3 proves he will buy games when piracy isn't an option.

I never doubted that either. But point is, piracy has no big effect on sales of games. And you will never be technically able to avoid that. I'm a programmer, it is from principle not possible to avoid that. But that all doesn't change much, that I want to use the device I bought to full abilities. Hacking my DS brought me Homebrew like DSOrganizer, turned my DS into a MP3-player with lmp-ng and gave me additional games like Meteora. That didn't stopped me from buying great games and even recently I bought Pokemon White 2. Full price. Hacking is good, it increases the value of the device I paid for WITHOUT piracy. Piracy does not kill business, bad decision kill business. DS and Wii and software on these devices selled great, even hacked. I see much room for improvement for the WiiU specifically, most of all the Wii-mode sucks and could be much improved.

So an big yeah for jailbreaking. You will have to do it in the future in cars too, with more and more computers even in cars, the morons in suits will think, they can get restrict you to drive on some roads. Or something similar stupid.

For what I understand the Wii mode and the normal Wii U don't have "any connection" between the two. Technically the Wii U shuts itself down and it reboots the system into a normal Wii. If there's a way to connect "both systems" I don't imagine the security of the Wii U being the same (or even weaker considering the time) than the Wii. If that's the case then that was a incredible big mistakes from Nintendo. Companies take very seriously the hacking thing, so I just can't simple imagine this being so easy...

It's impossible to make a SO not have connection with other OS... it's the same hardware... they share everything... it's like your PC booting with Windows or Linux... but the hardware is the same for all so you can decript the Windows password from Linux for example.

First they hacked the Wii Mode... now the Wii U mode... I think they used the Wii Mode to access the Wii U and get the information to hack the system.

Just speculation of course.

Do you know the concept of virtualization? (Sorry if that's not the right term in English, I just made an exact translation from Spanish) It basically simulates a hardware to emulate another OS and execute it in isolation.

You can execute different OS at the same time with a software call Virtual Box and both instances don't have any connection (at least not to my knowledge). I imagine the Wii U is using the same principle with the Wii mode. This is also speculation though.

You can access the host OS from the virtual OS and vice-versa with VirtalBox or any other virtualization system... you can't access at same time (there are CPU instructions for that too in AMD and Intel but that's more cooporative use).

Even in the virtualization the instaces have connection because share the same hardware... you can access from the Host OS the memory used by the virtual OS for example.

And VirtualBox is software virtualization... so all the things are shared between both system... the hardware virtualizations have some restrictions and more security.

Plus I don't know if Wii U have virtualization or just dual-boot because for virtualization you don't need to boot the first OS... and if it's virtualizations what kind it is.

I really don't think this hack came from the vWii side of things. They share the same hardware, but the iOS on the vWii are coded specifically for Wii compatibility. Extended memory space and multiple CPU compatibility does not exist in the vWii, so it would have to be coded in by a hacker. And in order for a hacker to code that in, they'd already have to know the inner workings of the WiiU anyway, which can't be probed from the vWii without custom drivers. Its a catch-22.

Hackers have said that the WiiU security chip is just as vulnerable as the Wii's (Starlet). I think they opened the box up, connected some pins directly to it, and started issuing commands. From those commands they learned a software vulnerability, either at the kernel level or at the system menu level, and then exploited from there.

They're keeping things close to the chest for now so as to not ruin the hacking fun for themselves and for everyone else should Nintendo decide to patch the system. Once they have a solid understanding and multiple exploits to fall back on, they will release something.

The reason the vWii got hacked so quickly is because there were multiple IOS exploits that were known to the hacking community, but kept secret from Nintendo so that they were not patched out when they wrote the corresponding vWii IOS.

I hope they hack it to make the Wii games playable on the WiiU controller. Maybe I would bother to finish Fire Emblem then.

That would be cool, but games with pointer-usage of the wii-remote will not work. But great for games that use only buttons and stuff.

You do know that at either side of the camera there are IR leds.

+1 This is the first post coming close enough to reality of this hack.

cool if someone makes a new homebrew channel, not cool if wii u becomes a hub for piracy

that would suck, but i don't think the majority of ninty fans would even think to look at pirated games.

well if i recall correctly, i believe Super Mario Galaxy was one of the most pirated games a few years back with over 1.2million downloads according to something :/

EDIT: this is what I was talking about:

http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-pirated-games-of-2011-111230/

Here's a comparison of the most pirated Wii, 3DS, and PSP games during the same time period.  The family image Nintendo has is the best thing that's going for them and that's why piracy isn't as large on Nintendo's consoles because most parents aren't going to think that their system can crash and play games.  I bet around half the people that purchased their games legitimately on all consoles either didn't know you could pirate or thought it may have been too difficult.  If they knew how easy it was the pirated numbers on all systems would have went up I'm sure.  That's how dishonest people are.

No, but do you really want to point on the WiiU gamepad with a remote? It makes only sense in my opinion for games, thathas inputs that can be mapped to the gamepad inputs. That should work for most of the games I play, but probably not for Just Dance.

Fudge you pirates gosh darnet.

Hopefully someday they are stopped. Hackers may say this is just for "NES" emulation but we know what it will lead to.

If someone said it was for NES emulation on the 3ds/wii/Wii-u nintendo would be just as pissed off, the Ninty e-shop sells NES games for 4-5euros a pop bit harsh when a 20mb folder on an SD card can hold about 400 of um.

When there is a need, you find a way. I'm sure people would be able to play IR games by putting the Gamepad on the stand, it can be awkward but it is possible.
