Okay so most are saying emulators are legal. I will look further into it but you gotta be fucking kidding yourself if you think people are downloading these emulators to play just custom made games. I beleive most people are downloading these to play the classics.

Actually, that's legal too.

Bleem! who won their case was specifically marketed as an emulator that allows you to play PS1 games on your dreamcast or computer.  They even used direct images from Sony created exclsuives like Metal Gear Solid and Tekken

The above was ruled totally legal.

The only thing in emulation that's actually illegal is downloading a Rom from the internet.

I have the GT2 version of that -- which was the only Sony published game of the three (Konami for MGS and Namco for Tekken 3) that that were released.

And it does work.

(I also have hardware converters which led me use a Sony PSX mat on Space Channel 5)

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I don't see why Nintendo would want to stop people from playing their games, illegal or not. How do you know Reggie doesn't have it on his phone?

NINTENDO

nintendo forever . . .

I've always wanted to know what Reggie, Miyamoto, and Iwata really and truly thought about some of the illegitimate activities that go on. Take wii hacking and homebrew. The scene has really made some things happen on the wii that I don't believe even Nintendo thought would be possible on the hardware, one of which being GC modem support and soon to come BBA support in a USB loader. Or heck, even USB loading in general. I know the corporate line, and that would be the line they'd toe no matter what. But I can't help but wonder if they're actually excited about some of the things the homebrew scene can do with their hardware.

Similarly, most of the internet's bandwidth is used for piracy.
Would you argue that the internet is illegal too?

In many countries (mine included), downloading ROMs is also legal. What is illegal is distributing these ROMs

Hey, everyone knows the Internet is for porn. So theres a bigger use-case than piracy and the internet can stay legal.

I fuckin agree, not because I hate emulators but PAYING FOR THEM is outrageous. Google should freeze the credits of those charging money for emulators, the bios and those emulation files are not theirs.

If you don't want to pay for open source emulators on the android market, then go download the source and compile it yourself. The Android SDK is free.

Whats that? You don't know how to compile for android? Can't compile for IOS? You mean the code actually needs to be altered to run on either platform?

Deal with it.

Sony sued bleem! for emulating the Playstation on the Dreamcast. They lost every lawsuit because emulation is perfectly legal so long as you own the original game. Backups are also 100% legal. You allowed to make backup copies of all software, videos, music, etc. for your own personal use. That means you can buy Final Fantasy III for the SNES, set it on a shelf, and legally play the ROM on any device you want.

So.... you own a game:

1) You can make backups of it

2) You can play it through whatever means for your personal use

3) You can't download the ROM from the internet.

How do you get cartridge games (NES/SNES/Genesis/N640 backed-up? Also, how do you back up disc games such as GameCube ones onto your PC?

As far as GC backups go: A modded Wii will do it for you, as will a specific brand of DVD rom and a dumper utility written specifically for ripping GC games on said DVD rom.

As far as cartridges go:

Also, here's a random forum post of someone who sounds like they know what they're talking about:

#3 isn't necissarily true. Backup law allows you to give permission to another person to make the backup for you. It's really no different than making the backup yourself. Only a company like MS, Sony, or Nintendo would argue against it.
