Sony sued bleem! for emulating the Playstation on the Dreamcast. They lost every lawsuit because emulation is perfectly legal so long as you own the original game. Backups are also 100% legal. You allowed to make backup copies of all software, videos, music, etc. for your own personal use. So.... you own a game:

1) You can make backups of it

2) You can play it through whatever means for your personal use

3) You can't download the ROM from the internet.

 

How do you get cartridge games (NES/SNES/Genesis/N640 backed-up? Also, how do you back up disc games such as GameCube ones onto your PC?

As far as GC backups go: A modded Wii will do it for you, as will a specific brand of DVD rom and a dumper utility written specifically for ripping GC games on said DVD rom.
