In the title you state, "Can PS3 still win the generation and outsell wii?" but at the end of your thread you say in 3-4 years? In 3-4 years the next generation will have started and this gen will be over. To answer your question no, the ps3 wont surpass the wii this generation. 

u can know by the DS strategy going against 3DS

if they don't stop DS within 2012,3DS will go down,get that

ovelapping happens when new console is very much different unlike current ninty consoles

also ninty isn't a company that has a long term strategy as gaming is nintendo major business and will not have other revenue sources to take easy

No. With the gap where it is, and current PS3 sales, it would take three years of the Wii selling zero units (i.e. discontinued) for the PS3 to catch up with it. Since it will overlap with the Wii U for at least a couple of years, however, and it's still selling very well, I don't see an immediate discontinuation. It's not impossible, and arguably stranger things have happened this generation, but it's highly unlikely.

Can PS3 sell 15m in Japan? Wii is trending for roughly that amount

Can PS3 sell 50m in the USA? Wii is still 18 months ahead of the PS2 pace in the USA, and PS2 hit 46m in the USA. PS2 certainly never topped 4m in a year once it was above 35m like Wii is in the USA.

Can PS3 sell 40m in Europe & Australia ? It looks like Wii will get there.

Sony definitely does have some advantages in developing markets, but lets not pretend its a white-washing here - Wii has sold well in Mexico, Brazil and South Korea, and decently in mainland South East Asia. From what I can tell the main difference between Nintendo and Sony is in Eastern Europe and the Middle East where Sony has a strong presence and Nintendo has virtually no presence.

PS3 will probably have some kind of weird lifetime split compared to Wii and PS2 -

It probably is conceivable that outside the USA market, PS3 will end up topping Wii figures lifetime, but even by that measure I'd expect to come ahead a little bit.

When you think about it regionally it is impossible for the PS3 to catch the Wii WW. In order for the PS3 to catch the Wii, it would have to catch and outsell the Wii in EMEAA & Japan.That's a difficult feat in it's own, but that's not all. It would also have to outsell the Wii in those regions by enough units to counter the Wii's lead in NA. That's just not happening.

I already included christmas sales in that "lets assume it sells 30% better than it has been for the entire of the next 216 weeks" thing. This is unrealistic. The PS3 will NOT average 164 554 for the next 216 weeks, and the Wii will not average 0. I was presenting best case for the PS3, and even worse than the worst possible case for the Wii. Even with that generosity, it still would not occur before the PS3 had dropped to meaningless sales levels.
