Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo's Facebook bombarded with Xenoblade/The Last Story/Pandora's Tower comments

Nintendo didn't make a true sequel to Super Mario World until 2009. Nintendo did not only risk losing fans, they actually did lose them. Why? Because Shigeru Miyamoto had more fun making other games and publicly said that he does not wish to make another 2D Mario game.

Super Mario Bros. is Nintendo's biggest IP. Going almost two decades without a sequel casts huge doubts on their business sense, so assuming that they know what they are doing may not be a smart decision.

I don't think that Miyamoto wanting otherwise was the reason 2D Mario went on a hiatus. Not the sole one, anyway. It's far more likely that the company as a whole thought that the 2D era was over when they started making 3D games. Their attitude was probably comparable to some "core" gamers today who can't properly appreciate the simple, uncomplicated design of Super Mario Bros. (Arguably, it's similar to the argument of people such as myself on this site who don't think iOS apps aren't real games.) Miyamoto likely hated on it publicly to go along with the company's stance.

The level of stupidity and not knowing what they're doing that would be required for them to sacrifice as little as one fan and fifty bucks just because they feel like being mean is far too high for any corporation a tenth as large as Nintendo.

Surprisingly, Yahoo Japan is covering the story as well:

Good. Maybe NCL will see this and realize how much NoA suck!

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Nintendo should be more straight forward globally with their releases. A game coming out in Japan, US, or Europe doesn't mean anything to the rest, just that it might come over. And that process can take years...

If Nintendo is truly interested in targeting the "hardcore" demographic with the Wii U, the smartest possible thing they can do right now (besides allowing up to four tablet controllers to be used at once) is to target the damn hardcore demographic RIGHT NOW. They have a year before Wii U launches, and all the Wii has coming out is Zelda and Kirby. Not good enough. That allows for more than enough time for gamers to just forget about the Wii brand before the new system launches. If they dropped Xenoblade, Kirby, Zelda, Last Story, and Pandora's Tower every other month until Wii U launches, then they'll keep people focused on the Wii brand and have a better chance of a successful launch.

This would also go a long way toward convincing us hardcore gamers that Nintendo really and truly cares about appealing to us.

The problem is they are thinking of hardcore gamers as the preteen kids who make racists and homophobic comments playing COD and Halo on Xbox Live.  For whatever reason, that's now become the standard definition of "hardcore" thrown around by G4 and the media.  That's the group that would never be caught dead with a Nintendo console.

I think hardcore gamers like us have been relegated to niche gamers.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Looks like they're taking note! Reggie said he reads blog at E3 2009 so surely he's seen this, but I'm happy that last story is likely to come over to Europe in 2012 but still they need to be making a a way to USA.

Even if they agree to a release, we still need to keep the campaign going.  Answer, non-answer, or denial... doesn't matter what wwe hear from them.  We'll still have to send the letters and fight on for The Last Story, too.

After Super Mario World, the 2D era still lasted another five years. More than enough time to make a sequel. Miyamoto said something along the lines of "I've made these games before, I don't want to make them again" and that can be seen in Super Mario World 2 which actually isn't a sequel to SMW, but the start of a new spinoff series: Yoshi's Island.

Nintendo made Wii Music their big holiday game in 2008 with only Animal Crossing: City Folks being the safety net. Not too long afterwards they ceased to produce copies of Wii Music, because the game was such a big mistake. My point is that Nintendo has repeatedly proven in the past that they don't know what they are doing. They aren't immune to colossal blunders, rather it's a reoccuring theme spanning through the company's video game history.

For the first part, that was obviously because Nintendo deemed the 2D era to be over, even when it wasn't. They didn't want silly 2D games to interrupt their new 3D market. They were wrong, I'll give you that. And, yeah, they messed up with Wii Music and Animal Crossing in 2008, too. But that's not my point. Sure, they misjudged the market, but that was probably an honest mistake.

The thing is, if Nintendo, or almost any corporation, however minor, takes a decision, it is because they think it's the right one and certainly not because they "want to".

That doesn't follow. You're assuming that selfishness in decisions somehow doesn't override practicality when it comes to corporations. History shows that businesses quite often do things that are based on selfishness, and just lie to themselves that it's the right decision.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

"Thank you for your enthusiasm. We promised an update, so here it is. We never say “never,” but we can confirm that there are no plans to bring these three games to the Americas at this time. Thanks so much for your passion, and for being such great fans!"

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?

Everyone should snail mail to Iwata to lay the smackdown on NOA. Now, what's his home address again?
