Nintendo didn't make a true sequel to Super Mario World until 2009. Nintendo did not only risk losing fans, they actually did lose them. Why? Because Shigeru Miyamoto had more fun making other games and publicly said that he does not wish to make another 2D Mario game.

Super Mario Bros. is Nintendo's biggest IP. Going almost two decades without a sequel casts huge doubts on their business sense, so assuming that they know what they are doing may not be a smart decision.

I don't think that Miyamoto wanting otherwise was the reason 2D Mario went on a hiatus. Not the sole one, anyway. It's far more likely that the company as a whole thought that the 2D era was over when they started making 3D games. Their attitude was probably comparable to some "core" gamers today who can't properly appreciate the simple, uncomplicated design of Super Mario Bros. (Arguably, it's similar to the argument of people such as myself on this site who don't think iOS apps aren't real games.) Miyamoto likely hated on it publicly to go along with the company's stance.

The level of stupidity and not knowing what they're doing that would be required for them to sacrifice as little as one fan and fifty bucks just because they feel like being mean is far too high for any corporation a tenth as large as Nintendo.
