Miyamoto said something along the lines of "I've made these games before, I don't want to make them again" and that can be seen in Super Mario World 2 which actually isn't a sequel to SMW, but the start of a new spinoff series: Yoshi's Island. Nintendo made Wii Music their big holiday game in 2008 with only Animal Crossing: City Folks being the safety net. Not too long afterwards they ceased to produce copies of Wii Music, because the game was such a big mistake. My point is that Nintendo has repeatedly proven in the past that they don't know what they are doing. They aren't immune to colossal blunders, rather it's a reoccuring theme spanning through the company's video game history. |
For the first part, that was obviously because Nintendo deemed the 2D era to be over, even when it wasn't. They didn't want silly 2D games to interrupt their new 3D market. They were wrong, I'll give you that. And, yeah, they messed up with Wii Music and Animal Crossing in 2008, too. But that's not my point. Sure, they misjudged the market, but that was probably an honest mistake.
The thing is, if Nintendo, or almost any corporation, however minor, takes a decision, it is because they think it's the right one and certainly not because they "want to".
