Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Brain Training for Switch announced

Oh, that is so nice. And it comes with a stylus, I really don't know why the Switch didn't include one.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I'm actually looking forward to this.
Part of it is the historical element of Brain Age being the beginning of the proper casual games market. That is, games where play sessions only require a few minutes a day and have you coming back daily over a long period of time. It wasn't the first casual game: there were some browser games that did this (like Earth 2025 and Utopia) back in the 1990s, and Animal Crossing was an early console game that was less casual (play sessions were usually a minimum of about 10 minutes or so). But, it was Brain Age popularized the genre and began the expansive market on handheld consoles and especially on facebook and mobile.

Also, Brain Age was actually a lot of fun, this one looks like it expands on that original concept. Truthfully, I kind of wanted something like this on Switch - as it currently stands I have been playing the FF8 card game for a few minutes here and there when I have a few minutes of spare time.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

So they could sell it with this game!

It's a good strategy.

To be fair including it with software that would make use of it is probably better for them on a cost saving way as well.

Think about it as well, nearly 20% of users of the Switch were said to be using it in TV mode primarily so out of 40m Switches sold that would mean that 8 million of those stylus would be wasted if they were packed in with every system, would be like the Xbox1's Kinect2.0 except not something that cost around $100 extra to pack in with the console....

The 3DS Brain Training flopped hard. People have moved on. There are a million of these types of things available on phones for $0.

I figured you would say that but as I've been telling you since these discussions began, the Switch cannot become wildly successful without the mass market customers on board. For the holiday season we have Pokémon, Ring Fit Adventure, Brain Training and the Switch Lite and the first big game next year is Animal Crossing. Nintendo is targeting a broader audience with the Switch now and this is a good thing: Switch sales have been very decent but nowhere near the baseline Nintendo wants them to be... because it targeted too narrow an audience before. This is the way to go forward and this time Nintendo will hopefully avoid the mistake of releasing half-baked games for the mass market, thus avoiding low sales.

Will Brain Training be as successful as the DS version? Certainly not. Could it sell millions of copies? Sure, if Nintendo plays their cards right. And right now there's a very good balance between hardcore, classic and casual games on the Switch. It's a win-win for everyone.

I'm not sure how this will do. So far, Nintendo's most successful endeavors have been their core games. Labo was a flop. Nintendo is certainty going in on it with Brain Age and Ring Fit. I don't see this being the success it was with the DS. Wether it can be a moderate success or another flop will be what determines the direction of these titles.

Still, I wonder what Nintendo has. These games can't be that difficult to make. And we haven't go much from them in 2018 and 2019 (internal developers I mean). So whats 2020 going to be?

How many times are people going to say this? 1.5 million is not a flop. Yeah, it didn't blow up, but it's far from a failure.

There's an audience for everyone. Sure there's apps that can do this on smartphones. Then again, there's children whom this may appeal to...or their parents for a video game console. If there's an advance mode for adults alike who loves the mental challenge, then I'd say they will hit their target audience. I'm sure Nintendo doesn't expect this to sell like their flagship franchises, but still off variety.

Yeah, a Switch Sports Resort title or something along these lines could be a major title with >10M sold copies and would drive sales of titles like this Brain Age thing, RingFit Adventures, Go Vacation, Hyper Sports R or Just Dance.

Casuals and serious gamers both loved Wii Sports.  Basically, every person that played it had fun with it.  It does seem like a no brainier to bring to Switch.  It has to be coming....

Yeah I'm sure some kind of Switch Sports title must be in the pipeline, it's the logical next step in their current trajectory with games like Fitness Boxing, Brain Training, and Ring Fit Adventure, games that attempt to emulate the kind of software that sold the Wii and DS. Hopefully it's more in line with Ring Fit Adventure and less like 1-2 Shit.

Fuck it. Nintendo might as well try. Brain Age on the Switch cannot be that much of a risk.
