Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation Classic is out & receiving "Do Not Buy" recommendations (did Sony even develop it themselves?) *updated 12/5/18

The PlayStation Classic is now available to the general public, and it has been receiving some savage reviews on YouTube.  In between my creation of the post and the release of this mini-console, it was revealed that Sony opted to use the PAL versions of 9 out of the 20 games on the system.  This equated to slower framerates than North American gamers remember playing their games at back in the day.  Remarkably though, even the NTSC games on the system are said to have noticeable lag and sluggish controls.  The system does not even come with a power supply.  Sony is relying on the consumer to use their own USB power supply to power the system that Sony is selling them for $100.  The problem with this?  Some purchasers are winding up with fried systems from trying out different USB that the mini console wasn't designed for.  Which is what can happen when the manufacturer relies on the consumer to supply their own parts to make the product they bought operable.  So many corners have been cut with this mini console, it's an easy no buy for me.  I really hope this thing bombs rather than cash in on unsuspecting people's nostalgia.  At a $100 price point, there is no reason for the end product to be of a lower quality standard than the Atari minis from AtGames.

I definitely prefer opinions that seem a bit more nuanced and credible. Like Digital Foundry for example, which state that it’s disappointing it makes the PS1 look the worse than it actually was.

Concerning bombing we sadly will be disappointed, I assume, as it’s currently pretty high on Amazon’s top 10.

I didn’t really care for this thing, but this really seems like a quick cash in with a low quality not typical for a Sony product, which is really disappointing. Really hope this isn’t related to John Kodera as new Playstation boss and a sign of things to come.

It is said that us forum dwellers happen to be out of sync with the general audience sometimes, and that we misgauge the public interest of certain games and products. I wonder if this will be the case, too, and if people will still buy this thing nontheless.

It is declining really fast, so hopefully there is a consumer push back from this, and they do release good version later on. I really do want a product like this, just not this, this is awful.

They really should recall it and deliver a decent product instead. I really don’t care for PS1 games anymore, but I hope the backlash is strong enough to make them reconsider that decision, for those who do. Especially for those who have bought it already.

So many things wrong with that thing.
But it's really pathetic when you use an open source emulator instead of a Sony developed one and use a chip that's not powerful enough to run certain games without framerate issues.

I would understand it more if it were just the average impulse buying consumer who is blissfully unaware of how many corners were cut and what a shoddy product this turned out to be.  What I find sad/alarming is how many people are commenting on the YouTube Reviews in particular with things like "I don't care what you say, I'm still buying it", and "Doesn't matter, this product is right up my alley because Nostalgia".  These are people who have been properly warned, but insist on keeping their heads stuck in the sand like an ostrich.  That kind of behavior from a fanbase sends a very dangerous message to Sony that it's okay to ship out a poorly manufactured device to market because as long as the "Sony" logo is slapped on the face of it, there will be no shortage of people willing to throw their money at it.  That's a really bad precedent to set in my opinion.  It gives the manufacturer "zero" incentive to put any further time, money, or effort to do better on future products.  The fanbase will have already made it known that they don't care about quality.  Which is a shame, if that's the case.  But, as the old saying goes, "A fool and his money are soon parted."

The thing has only 16 GB of internal storage. Bummer. But at least it seems to communicate just fine with USB devices. So the use of an external hard drive should be a possibility.

Should be hacked within a week or two.

It does seem it's not up to the quality of the other classic consoles, though as Eurogamer notes, it's a little more difficult to get PS1 right then Nes/Snes.

Anyway, as with the others I think these are only really collectors items, practically I have no use for them. If I wanted to emulate a game I'd do it on something I already own, or build a similar classic system with a Raspberry Pi.

It doesn't surprise me if this has been rushed out the door for the holiday season, at least it looks nice.

I know this is an old post and maybe your opinion has changed.

The thing is Sony has already emulated the PS1 very well and its been done on various Sony platforms. Either the emulator was poorly designed or the specs are crap. This kinda reminds me of the Sega Genesis TV devices, it poorly designed but Sony is actually pushing this device.

Maybe I'm asking for too much but in a world using HD screens, maybe they should have opted for a resolution boost in games. That was a benefit of playing N64 games on a Wii or Wii U.

I hope it bombs badly so that the inevitable PS2 Classic is done much better than this thing. Not going to happen though, it’ll sell very well.

As a Playstation fan i must say it looks like a crappy cashgrab.
