Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Price Cut in 2008 is it possible?

I been thinking Sony has three system on the market Ps2 8years on the market, psp which also sell a decent amount and Ps3. Im sure there making money on both Psp and Ps2,  especialy on the ps2.

My questions are do you think a price cut on the PS3 is possible  this year and also what if they did drop the price to $299.00 what would happen to sales???

Anything is possible, but Sony would need to see a sales problem to drop the price again without being able to lower hardware costs. Why cut if you don't need to?

EDIT: by the way... nice doggie...

After the 360's performance last week, it's highly unlikely. If MS would have cut into Sony's sales they would have cut the PS3's price, but MS could barely get over the PS3 in the price cut's first week. They aren't even showing much potential of winning the holiday, let alone hurting Sony's sales.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

That is not possible. Maybe mid-late 2009 but not now.

It could happen, but I think Sony is going to wait and see how things play out, now that Microsoft has made their moves for the end of the year, as far as price goes. I think we will start to see extream PS3 marketing go into effect next month, reminding the casual consumers that it is not just games, but an all in one media hub for the living room. If they can get people to buy into PS3 for both games and movies I think they will do ok and be able to hold off a price cut tell after the holidays.

So basically I think Sony is really sweating it right now hoping that consumers do their homework before buying. The PS3 is easly the best value for your dollar out of the three systems, but consumers need to be aware of that, and they have to be able to give it the value of appeal.
Consumers on the fence will be a big part for both MS and Sony this holiday, and with research the fence sitters should see PS3 as the obvious choice. If Little Big Planet can do its job on one end, and The Dark Knight seals up the other end, I think PS3 will have great appeal value this winter. Take the fence sitters buy feeding them the facts through advertising, grab the gaming crowd with the lovable LBP, and pull in the people that want to see the best version of TDK and I think they can sweep buy without a possible price drop.

I agree. Sony will not cut the price this year, for the above stated reasons. Now is a good time to buy a PS3, because gamers know that there is no price cut around the corner.

This is really the first time in a while that potential PS3 buyers can be confident that the system won't drop in price right after they buy it.

And by delaying as long as they can before cutting the price, it will

-increase the effect of the next price cut, (whenever it may be)
-keep the PS3 nearing towards a break even point (most important)
-show the perceived value (as real as it is) between itself and the 360. Clearly differentiating it from the "lower end" HD console.

But with that being said, if Sony went nuts and pulled "a microsoft" by cutting the price- especially all the way down to $299 before this Christmas - it would be absolute pandemonium.

Sony would not be able to keep up with demand, and would be sold out through mid-February.

But No Chance!

Doubt there will be a price cut until next year. If Sony is able to keep up with the 360 despite being higher in price, why cut the price when it would cost the company more? Besides it's still the only company in the hardware race with a "last-gen" system still selling with decent numbers. I imagine sometime within the next 2 years, with a strategic combination of a price-cut, and the slowing demand for the PS2, the PS3 will see a steady but significant rise in sales.

Microsoft made a healthy decision to drop price. They are in their 3rd year. They can now focus on the lower income potential crowd. Sony made similar choices during their third year of the PS2.

MS are continously proving that price cuts do nothing but blip sales for a few weeks and I think Sony are smart enough to see this. We are entering the holiday season where price isnt the deciding factor anyway, its more important to brainwash parents and children into believeing your console is the best.

Cutting the RRP can have a negative effect on sales too as if it happens too frequently, customers will expect another soon and will hold off making a purchase until that happens. It also makes people assume that the machine is selling badly as theyre continously trying to boost sales.

In the case of the 360 i think they have just saturated their potential market so pretty much no matter what they do, theyre not going to see a massive increase in market percentage but the PS3 still has a long way to go. More games are needed, more of they typical PS3 franchises and some new ones too, they are well over due now.
