If you open your profile and look at the address there, you'll notice a number before your username. I bet you that's an ID that is something like 1 for the first user ever created and is then increased by one for every new user. Your ID is over 500,000 and you registered over three years ago, which would probably put the total number of users ever created at well over 500,000. Many of those users have probably been deleted for one reason or another, but for the total number of users ever created, I think that's a pretty good guess. Those ~130,000 accounts are probably the ones that still remain. It's a curiously large difference, but there's probably a good explanation (or several) for that. I wonder if the user list includes banned users as well - if not, that would probably explain a lot.

Ah, you are right! Just checked the “Newest Users” list, and sure enough, their profile URL number goes up in order. I wonder what 130k figure represents then? Perhaps users who haven’t been banned? That’s all I can figure.

Also, if you change the URL number to 1, you can find the first user ever created on VGChartz: @VGChartzAdmin.

I actually don't think that is accurate with that username being the first ever created account. Unless the join date of "June 22nd 2009" is wrong. VGChartz was created in 2006. Though, I don't know the exact date off the top of my head. @ioi is the creator of the site and his account was created on November 27th 2006.

I like speculating too much, so here's my guess, as a software developer: Initially users didn't need a creation time attached to them - or that first user was created directly in the database, so it was initially missing creation time because of that. Later, it was decided that every user must have a creation time, and users without a creation time were assigned one arbitrarily.

The creation time part I'm less sure about, but I'd be really surprised if the numbers weren't IDs that are increased sequentially - you'd have to go out of your way to have the user with ID 1 be created after so many more users are created with larger IDs.

@VGChartzAdmin being ID 1 does make sense as the first created account.

Ah yes the 1969 bug.

Edit: I see there are 4 articles with "31 December 1969" as the date.

2006 to me doesnt seem like that long ago. Hard to fathom its 20 years

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

I guess I will share a funny memory now that i am sitting back and thinking about this. I remember in late 2007 I was at my computer, I was 18 years old. I made my account on vgchartz and I was considering what profile pic to upload. I looked to my left on the floor and my cat was making the pose you see in that picture. I took my digital camera, snapped the photo, and uploaded it to use it as my profile pic, and it has been the same pic ever since. Crazy to think about that. I remember it like it was yesterday, but at the same time it feels like.. another world. In a way. I guess it was.
