Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Direct (Sept 2026): Expectations & Wishes

I feel like many forget that Directs are meant for Nintendo's core audience. As in those who primarily or exclusively play on Nintendo hardware. They're well aware that a lot of these ports are years old, but not to their core audience. To the core audience, they're still new games.

For me, I primarily play first-party Nintendo games, with the occasional third-party game that I feel suits a Nintendo console best. Such as Mouse PI for Hire, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Yooka-Replaylee, or the upcoming Toy Story collection.

So as a more passive Nintendo enjoyer, the Direct was a 4/10. But, I can completely understand why those who main Nintendo's consoles, would give the Direct an 8 or 9/10. If anything, Nintendo is continuing to flex that the Switch 2 is just as capable of being a third-party console as it is a first-party console.

I have a good feeling that by this time next year, hardly any third-party games will be missing on Switch 2 at their launch. It's already leaning heavily in that direction.

I was mainly a Nintendo gamer until I got a PS4 in 2019. I'd love Switch 2's third-party lineup so much more and the reveals if I didn't have a PS4 and PS5.

And I really want to play Duskbloods but it's still MIA with a 2026 release date still listed

I would not be shocked if it's pushed to Q1/Q2 2027 for more polish.

I feel like grading these presentations is kinda stupid TBH. Like I enjoyed what I saw, there are good games coming, what more can I ask for? Nintendo’s marketing this generation has been sketchy, I can agree you guys on that, but… IDK. I just don’t get the whole “This Direct was a 10/10!!” or “This Direct was a 0/10!! >:(“

Yeah that is strange as this Direct was meant for the remainder of the year and Winter in general, which goes into early 2027. You'd think it would be a lock for Duskbloods to have been present. I wonder if the network test got some crucial info that FromSoft feels needs to be addressed?

Not sure if a dedicated Direct would even be necessary, since many people have already played the game. I wouldn't be surprised either if there's a delay into next year.

Because you came of age when the method started to get questioned on a broader scale. Not most of us here. We grew up at a time when everything was judged by a rating. Old habits die hard.

Plus, it's just a personal feeling. Was it good, bad, or somewhere in the middle? A numerical rating paints a clearer picture in my head about how I felt about something.

I want to be excited for new Metroid, but I pretty much hated what I've seen.

Why? I'm very curious. My only fear is that the music sounds a lot like Dread. And that was easily the weakest aspect of Dread.

I like Metroid to be in classic format - as in Samus exploring and using her gun, not kicking around in melee like she is in Super Smash.

But, truth be told, Zero Mission is last 2D Metroid I really liked.

I mean... if that's how you feel, ok. But Dread is still 90% gunning. Even when you add the melee counter, whenever you activate it is followed by gunning.

I've played Dread, but never finished it - I don't know, I felt too constrained (I don't like how linear Fusion was as well). Maybe I'll give it a chance some day again, but for me Metroid as IP has been far surpassed in Metroidvania genre by other titles for quite some time now. So, it's not just combat, it lacks exploration freedom it once had.

All said, I'll be more than happy to be wrong about Ravenous.

Ok, that's a completely different complaint. And one I can somewhat understand. Yeah, Dread does not lean on exploration as much as Super or even Zero Mission did. It's still an important aspect (you can still skip or obtain certain upgrades out of order and many expansions are very well hidden), but it's a more linear and combat-focused experience. So I understand some fans not liking games like Fusion or Dread.

As for Metroid having being surpassed by other Metroidvanias... I generally agree, but it's important to realize that Metroid hasn't been an actual Metroidvania in which you can wander around and get lost, do things in different order and unlock secret paths/shortcuts since Super (you could argue for Zero Mission, but it's debatable). The franchise has simply changed and has embraced this more linear approach in Fusion, Samus Returns and Dread. Comparing Hollow Knight to Metroid Fusion or Metroid Dread doesn't make much sense to me for example, because they each aim for very different gameplay experiences.

Expecting:

  • Pokemon
  • Xenoblade
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Just Dance
  • Zelda Movie Trailer
  • 3rd party reel
  • Some big 3rd party announcement
  • New announcement of a Kirby game (last mainline title came out in 2022, normally they release one mainline title every 3-4 years, so it's about time!)
  • Mario Kart World expansion DLC
  • Something about their amusement parks

Hoping:

  • Wii & WiiWare NSO
  • Sega Master System & Game Gear NSO
  • PC Engine/TurbographX NSO
  • Sega Saturn NSO
  • Dreamcast NSO
  • Neo Geo NSO
  • Sharp X68000 NSO
  • Some more games for the GameCube NSO (looking at you, Gladius!)
  • Come on Bowser, give us Mother 3!
  • New F-Zero
  • New Paper Mario

Well, apart from just dance and a Zelda movie trailer, my expectations were met - but none of my hopes,  sadly...
