I've played Dread, but never finished it - I don't know, I felt too constrained (I don't like how linear Fusion was as well). Maybe I'll give it a chance some day again, but for me Metroid as IP has been far surpassed in Metroidvania genre by other titles for quite some time now. So, it's not just combat, it lacks exploration freedom it once had. All said, I'll be more than happy to be wrong about Ravenous. |
Ok, that's a completely different complaint. And one I can somewhat understand. Yeah, Dread does not lean on exploration as much as Super or even Zero Mission did. It's still an important aspect (you can still skip or obtain certain upgrades out of order and many expansions are very well hidden), but it's a more linear and combat-focused experience. So I understand some fans not liking games like Fusion or Dread.
As for Metroid having being surpassed by other Metroidvanias... I generally agree, but it's important to realize that Metroid hasn't been an actual Metroidvania in which you can wander around and get lost, do things in different order and unlock secret paths/shortcuts since Super (you could argue for Zero Mission, but it's debatable). The franchise has simply changed and has embraced this more linear approach in Fusion, Samus Returns and Dread. Comparing Hollow Knight to Metroid Fusion or Metroid Dread doesn't make much sense to me for example, because they each aim for very different gameplay experiences.
