My dad got an Atari 2600 near launch before I was born, and it was the first console I played. In today's money, it was pretty close to absurdly expensive.

I think the first console we had specifically bought for us was the Master System. This was at a time that the SNES and Mega Drive (Genesis) were available, so we were a generation behind.

First home console I owned was a SNES in 1994, when the 32-bit consoles were launching in Japan and there were a bunch of failed mid-generation consoles like the Jaguar and 3DO that didn't really belong to either the SNES/Genesis era or the PS1/N64/Saturn era.

SNES for Christmas in 1994, so the PS1/Saturn were technically out in Japan I think, but not yet in Australia where I lived, so it was current gen, but shortly before the arrival of the next one.

My first dedicated gaming system was a Game Boy circa February 1998, along with Tetris Attack. So it was technically current gen, but only the very end of it.

Master System cost 60% of what MD/Gen (plus the store gave one of the cheapest games on top) and I guess dad thought the light gun was fun, so that's what I got.

Alternatively I had wanted a Commodore 64 (which would've cost same as MD), thinking I could copy games from friends and because it came with a pack of 14 games - 14!! Can you imagine having that many games?!
That was the cassette version... dodged a bullet there.
