Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

Sony is definitely pushing the $80 price tag asap as well. Discounts? Sony decides if you get any in an all digital future.

What i find interesting is that in the US at least, the remaining physical market for games is made up to a large extent of core gamers that buy lots of games and consoles day 1, so it seems pretty brave to piss off part of the target audience for day 1 launch buyers of an $1000+ PS6. You would think such an expensive console needs as many core gamers on board as possible, because for digital only casuals, that PS6 price point will be a tough sell already.

I didn't realize Sony is actually this dumb... holy shit. Nuh, the PS6 is going to bomb and consoles barring Nintendo's for the time being just lost the last major selling point over PC. Hopefully a major backlash forces them to reverse this bullshit. It's as if they're happy to kill their brand once and for all.

Nintendo's probably moving to GKC, but they're between a rock and a hard place due to cartridge prices, so I wouldn't mind it. Sony chose to create a problem out of thin air and they're getting fucked for it lol.

Hi we from sony regret to inform you that our liscensing deals for 90%of your games have expired, we will delist your games without a way to redownload them, we regret this but THANKS A LOT FOOL to believe in us and make us rich.
Have a nice day!
For the players!

Fully digital gamers that don't seem to see the gravity of the situation is both funny and sad at the same time...

Publishers decide the pricing of their own titles. Only first party games Sony will control.

But even then they've said the games will still be available at other retailers.

I don't think this is a reality. Console gamers don't care about PC, they want something cost effective to stick in their living room and already play most of their games digitally. This is a reality I think most need to accept. Console gamers lean digital and even most of those who don't, likely don't hate digital either. Suddenly Pokopia sold 50% of  its japanese launch sales digital because there is a stock shortage. I don't think it takes much for people to adapt.

The bigger issue for PS6 is its price. But hopefully this does cause enough backlash to warrant a change of tune and at least delay the date. When it comes down to genuine dollars I don't think it would wipe out much of Sonys audience but it could bury them under negativity and scrutiny.

Also interesting that they separate this from PS6 announcement, likely they know the backlash but also maybe they're giving themselves room to change course without it effecting the systems future

I really want to be mad about this, but seeing some of the users that are badly reacting to this, it makes me want to buy a PS5 Pro digital and preorder GTA VI just to spite on them... and I think that is exactly what I am going to do now. PS6 cant come sooner so I can snatch that too

GAME ON

We reap what we sow

Thats really sad news. Might skip the PS6 now. At least until everyone goes digital. I think MS has a chance to shine here, but they will probably follow suit. They are too money hungry to take advantage of this. Whoever keeps physical after January 2018 will benefit greatly from this.

How are they somewhat future proof?

In allowing a second hand market (not future proof in regards to game preservation/offline experiences)

I guess that works. Sony still sucks though.

I believe Japan esp supports physical. Sony just told Japan to go fuck themselves.

They blatantly shit all over customers from their home country. Sony has become the epitome of cutting off your nose to spite your face.
