Forums - Nintendo - No 3D Mario on Switch 2 yet seems to have short-circuited a lot of folks

Jokes on the guy who said that fans dont have any idea on what to do with a brand new Star Fox.
Give me a place as the main director and I will give you a game that make people forget Mario/Zelda/Smash exist.

This month's Starfox remake most likely exists to ascertain whether there is actually an audience for the IP any more (something that hasn't been clearly demonstrated since the 90s) without risking the amount of money it would cost to build an all new one.

If it succeeds, we'll likely see a new game follow.

Yeah, testing the waters is a reasonable thing to do, after such a long time in which the franchise failed to do anything. Some people seem to think that because they have rose-tinted glasses from then they played the thing in the past millenium that they know better than everyone and their tastes matter more. I played a lot of games in the 90s which are basically dead now. I liked some of them. I don't think everyone else that likes other games is stupid and only my tastes matter and only because there was no real try the series didn't recover. So let's see, if it really is a much hyped franchise and the second biggest game of the year we will see in sales numbers.

Sales wise, the second biggest game of the year, at least on Switch 2, is either Pokemon Pokopia or Switch Sports Resort, both will sell far more than Starfox.

The fact that this "new" starfox game is a remake is going to limit its sales.

And this whole idea that you cant take an old franchise, breathe new life into it, and make a really cool modernized sequel is just dumb. People would be saying the same thing about mario right now if nintendo didnt ever modernize it. Some people have such limited imagination, so they make judgements like this. Any new game from any franchise, and i mean ANY franchise, can be successful as long as the game is good. It really is as simple as that. Anyone who has been around long enough has witnessed phenomena like this in real time.

Star Fox will never be the second biggest game of the year from a commercial standpoint, so long as it exists in the same timeline as Mario and anything with Mario in the name, Pokemon, Zelda, Splatoon and Animal Crossing. I'm really glad that Nintendo doesn't decide whether an IP is worthy of a new entry based on that hard rule, otherwise we'd never see Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Captain Toad, Rhythm Heaven, Kirby, Yoshi, or any other B-tier franchise again, let alone have any hope of the others we've been begging for like F-Zero or Earthbound.

Kid Icarus: Uprising was brought up earlier in the thread; that game is a great example, and people have been thirsty for a sequel to it.

People need to realize its not always the sales that could prevent a game from coming out, but sometimes the creator just flat out doesnt want to make another unless they feel like it. Lol. I think that is a simple explanation why we havent seen much of some of these franchises, because they could easily make a buck on them. Isnt this what miyamoto said about star fox forever? That he didnt have any new ideas for it? Simple explanation for a lot of what we are seeing.

To be fair, games were much, much cheaper to make back on the 3DS so reviving a dead IP like that was easier to justify.

On Switch 2, even a game like an all new Starfox requires a significant budget, so I can see why Nintendo would want to check the audience's pulse before going all in on a new game.

Don't get me wrong of course, I would much prefer a new game myself, just theorising as to Nintendo's strategy here.
