Forums - Nintendo - No 3D Mario on Switch 2 yet seems to have short-circuited a lot of folks

Because we are talking about heavy hitters for (im going to use a late 2000s term that used to be lame, so bear with me while i try to make a point) hardcore gamers. Just because something sells massively to a widespread audience doesnt mean WE should care. It would be like saying who needs twilight princess when we have wii sports, wii play, and wii fit. I love those games and glad they sold but that doesnt mean theyre more important TO US than twilight princess, mario galaxy, or metroid prime 3. The latter games were the "heavy hitters" for the wii early on, even if they didnt sell as well as some other games. Just because a game sold more, im not going to consider a year good because of that. Its such a simplistic way of looking at things. If nintendo sold nothing but puzzle games like tetris or candy crush that sold 60 million copies every time because moms and grandmas were buying them, and then nintendo decided that the majority of their business was going to be this now, i dont think youd be too happy even if the games were selling well. Youd probably ask, where are the heavy hitters?

Why should anyone care about harcore gamers. Nintendo nearly died trying to cater to the hardcore: Gamecube, WiiU - these are not great numbers. When Nintendo left the hardcore in the dust and cared for broad appeal they were extremely successful: Wii, DS, Switch.

"Just because something sells massively to a widespread audience doesnt mean WE should care."

That's like saying: We shouldn't care if Nintendo goes bankrupt, is bought by Sony and has to deliver 20 live service games each year.

"It would be like saying who needs twilight princess when we have wii sports, wii play, and wii fit."

Twilight Princess sold about 9 million. That is not a small game. Even though the others did more, TP was part of Wiis success.

While I agree that everyone should look for the games they like, it is undeniable that sales number exactly mean that a lot of people like it. You and your tastes are not better than anyone elses.

my goodness mehnmehthenem, just give it a rest. i get it, you like games that sell a lot of copies. hopefully they announce pokopia 2 next year.

It doesn't matter what I like or not. Sales data tell us what the *majority* likes. The important part is that you wrote about the "biggest games of the year" and then moved the goalpost to hyped franchises, but lack the intellect to understand either. Instead you mistake throwing a tantrum like a toddler for a proper argument. If you would take like one minute before posting, thinking it through, the quality of your post might actually improve. Give it a try!

Actually, Nintendo's biggest game this year is and will be Tomodachi, yes its a NS1 game, but it's still Nintendo first party, and still released this year. It will end up being the best selling game from Nintendo for 2026

So, it seems it already sold 3.8 million copies, that is amazing! So yeah, it might do well, although I am not sure how well Sports Resort will go in this day and age. Probably not as much as on Wii, but how much sales power is still in it? For Tomodachi, I kinda hoped it would sell more Switch 2, but apparently people are well aware it is a Switch game and don't get a Switch 2 for it. Kinda disappointing.

Well, yes. It can be disappointing. But as I said in my first post: Donkey Kong clearly took the place of Mario in development and the team was on it, so I wouldn't expect it soon. But I think it is a good thing. Better wait for it, than taking a half-cooked idea. They had a good gameplay idea, it just fit better with Donkey Kong than Mario. Or could you see Mario ragestomping through the ground and tunneling into a mountain?

i was being sarcastic i dont care about no 3d mario, i think its strange that there is not one but i really dont care. i just think its annoying that they are focusing on remaking 30 year old games

It's clearly not focusing, as there are bigger games releasing. But yeah, weird that they give Star Fox another go. Zelda at least will be enjoyed by people, even if the graphics is kinda weirding me out. But there are definitely bigger releases.

ocarina of time is their biggest release of the year. yes, im going to use that word because that is how nintendo is going to treat it. i dont care how much you like pokopia or how much it sells, ocarina of time is their biggest release. they saved it for the end of the direct, they understand there is going to be more hype surrounding this game than anything else theyve published this year, and no matter how much you disagree that hype is fake, that is exactly what theyre doing. they understand the hype and they are playing into it. thats why they saved it for the end, thats why they made it a teaser trailer, thats why they didnt give a definitive release date. because there is hype and they plan on fanning those flames because they understand the things that i am talking about. this is their biggest release of the year and the one they are counting on to generate interest in their system. argue with that all day long, i dont care.

I don't know about that. Despite a much smaller installbase Pokopia isn't selling that much slower and should have stronger legs simply because of all the people without a Switch 2 who will buy it when they finally get one.

Pokopia is also getting DLC support through to 2027 which will help it's legs.

This year Tomodachi will win, lifetime Pokopia definitely has a chance of beating it. Switch Sports Resort lifetime could beat it also. I don't think Tomodachi is going to keep selling for years.
