Forums - Gaming - Which 3D 6th gen games have aged the most gracefully visually in your view, and why

Yeah Factor 5 who made the Rogue Squadron games were insane technical wizards that came up with the craziest custom code tricks to really max out the hardware; it made their games some of the absolute best looking GC/N64 titles, but also means they're a bitch to emulate.

You know what makes it more impressive?  It was 60 fps...

Yeah seeing those games running at 60fps back in the day was mind-blowing, I still remember seeing Rogue II running in a Gametraders when I was like 12; on a CRT TV it looked like the movies come to life in playable form, I could hardly believe my eyes, being used to N64 graphics.

A fair few of Gamecube's best looking games were 60fps; Metroid Prime 1 +2 and Starfox Adventures as well.

Another vote for Wind Waker. Games with cartoony graphics in general from those older gens of 3D consoles have always aged better than most game aiming for "realistic" visuals. So many games from those days were eyesores even back then, but the ones with a good, stylized art style hold up much, much better.

I also think Halo CE holds up well for the most part, again because of its art style. It's definitely showing its age, particularly with human character models, but the environmental art still looks great today, and it does cool things like copious particle effects (with actual physics!) and blood & bullet hole/plasma scoring decals that persisted, things that later games seemed to struggle with a lot even within just the Halo series.

Also, some fighting games like Soul Calibur and DOA3 still look fairly solid.

Star Fox Adventures still looks good. If only it was the right style of gameplay instead of just space Zelda.

RE4 and anything cartoony. 1st party GameCube games still look awesome for the most part.

Yeah I'd say Halo 1 has weirdly aged better than Halo 2 just due to having a cleaner, simpler look

Not to diminish achievement of GC version, but I think those gifs look like they are from Resident Evil 4 HD Project, which is mod for PC's RE4 Ultimate HD Edition from 2014.

Warning: Loud background music in video

I figured from the resolution that they were probably at least emulated, it's nearly impossible to find good quality images of the Gamecube version.

Thankfully, there's some reviews and such still on YT:

Those videos did a great job illustrating how it looked.

I'd argue that, when upres'd, RE4 (GC version) could easily pass for a 7th gen game. It's just a game ahead of its time.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Great art direction and attention to detail go a long way; it's the same as how a lot of people still consider PS4/XBO games like RDR2 and TLOU2 to be among the best looking games to this day, despite those games being a generation behind modern games technologically.

Not directed at you, but I wonder how much nostalgia plays a role with people thinking old games look better than they are.

I say that because I have been playing nothing but current gen for a few months and cranked up bloodborne.  It put into perspective how massive the jump from ps4 to ps5 was.  Blood, still a great game...  grainy, jaggies everywhere, very clearly low resolution, lighting is very meh and of course 30 fps.

It didn't look half as good as I remembered.  Not sure if that is a me thing or we all experience it.

Yeah I've certainly had moments where I've revisited a game that blew me away in its time, and gone "wow, this is showing its age."

Doom 3 and Riddick on the OG Xbox blew my mind as a teenager, but looking at them now, the years have not been kind.

Halo and RE4 look dated as hell to me. Separate note, anything that aims for hyper realism ages the fastest.
