The fact that Switch 2 became the best selling system already during its launch year means its momentum would need to crater pretty hard for PS5 to overtake it this year. Because a normal hardware sales cycle should mean that PS5 will sell less in 2026 than in 2025 due to being a year older, while Switch 2 should sell a bit more in its second year than during its launch year. So for Switch 2 to be outsold by PS5 this year could only happen if for some reason its momentum stalls so much that it declines in sales year on year even more than PS5 will decline in sales this year in its sixth year on the market. Not 100 % impossible but it would be highly unusual.

I think it more likely the Switch takes 2026, even with GTA,SAROS,Wolverine this year for PS5.

The funny thing is 2m for the Xbox Series is actually very optimistic but the amount its selling is so low now that it doesn't matter whether it sells closer to 1m or 2m this year. It's dead either way.

Yes, we already have a thread about that fact on this forum. So PS5 selling more than Switch 2 this year means Switch 2 will have a bigger year on year decline in its second year on the market compared to PS5 year on year decline in its sixth year. And given how much more Switch 2 will sell in Japan vs PS5 this year, Switch 2 would need to see its sales crater completely in the west for that to happen this year.

The Switch 2 was the best selling system in 2025?

PS5 sold through ~17,4m in 2025.
Switch 2 sold through ~15.5m in 2025 (shipped like ~17m).

So this year, the PS5 sold more, but only because the Switch 2, launched in like early June.

Just googled it :P
I'm super lazy.... I could go back and add up all the totals from months here, but.... yeah lazy atm.

If Switch 2 sell 5M units in Japan vs 600k PS5 units this year, that would mean Switch 2 sales would need to crater in western markets during 2026 for PS5 to come out on top in WW sales during 2026.
