But according to my own tracking (via Excel), my total spending for Steam games is around €10,000 in the last 20 years, so ~500 bucks average per year.

~200 bucks per year in the first Steam years, €500 - €700 per year in the 2010's and ~1000 bucks per year in the last few years.

Oh. These sites have way to much data on you. You can even tell if someone has spent time unemployed in their gaming history.

@BasilZero Why do you buy games? Is it a compulsion or do you intend to play and they get sent into your backlog cause you don't have time or what's the story? You could use that money for so many other areas of your life, even if it was in a savings account.

I was unemployed early 2010s and at one point had about 100 games finished in one year. Now I average around 20-25 per year.

Well most of my game purchases are from bundles on Fanatical or Humble, get like 8-10 games for like $15 to $20.

Combination of compulsion (bundle purchases) and the intention of playing them in the future (individual game purchases). Though I dont have as much free time to play games as I did 15 years ago, I still play a decent amount.

----

You make it sound like I dont know how to manage my finances.

Thankfully I made enough these last few years due to the amount of disposable income I had (although I'm going to cut off that due to the fact that I have a child now) -  my gaming purchases are only a drop in the bucket compared to everything else.

I spend about $200-$400 average a month (this includes money I get from my Youtube channel) compare to the $8,000+ on other expenses.

I dont mind sharing this but I have 3 savings accounts

First one I have $100 per month gets poured in by cutting it from my check.

Second one I put in $500 every two weeks

Third one I put in $500 every two weeks

So in total, about $2,100 gets poured into my savings account per month which is roughly $25,000 per year.

Been doing this for the past 3-4 years and thanks to that I was able to pay off my father's funeral costs immediately which cost me about $20,000.

I have debt from all the traveling and all the expenses I've had from when my father passed (outside of the Funeral costs), home maintenance and the further expenses from stuff getting expensive and my family getting bigger.

Once I'm done with clearing all that out (which at the way things are going right now - it will be cleared out by October 2025), planning to open up a fourth savings account and pouring another $1,000 per month.

Way less than I was expecting, given I spent $725.97 alone on Dota 2 battle passes and extras over the years.

My Steam Market stats according to Augmented Steam:

  • Purchase total: £92.68 ($122)
  • Sales total: £501.80 ($665)
  • Net gain: £409.12 ($542)

Same I have had times where I have had a lot of time to play, sounds great but it's really not, I hate those sites like PSN profiles cause it shows those times in the teophy data, even shows that I've had insomnia and I'm sure there is so much other data that can be extracted.

And yes, savings account over buying games you aren't going to play, especially games that you can't sell if it comes down to the wire is the way to go... some advice I might need to heed to cause you're doing way better than me with saving 😉. The data is misleading when you look at it at face value and I suppose it isn't difficult to rack up these numbers with bundles and all that, like you said.

Looking at my purchase history, it looks like the total amount spent doesn't include refunds. Like 3/4 of my Steam purchase history is refunds lol

You refund 75% of your Steam Games? wtf? lol.

I'd say I refund almost half of mine too. Steam's refund policy basically lets you demo a game and then refund it if you're not feeling it, which is great given how few games have actual demos nowadays. I only buy games I think/hope I'll enjoy (so it's not like I'm buying hundreds of games just to refund them), but as I've gotten older I've found it harder and harder to find games I truly enjoy, so I still end up refunding even the ones I had decently high hopes for.

Well no one's gonna know that unless you tell them lol - honestly I dont mind people seeing what I play and how often I play - I literally update my play time across these two sites daily.

Yeah, the number of games I'll be getting is gonna likely reduce cause there's not that many games left for me to buy (that is cheap enough) on consoles and so majority of my purchases will be from bundles on PC. Like last month, I was able to get about 25 games from a Fanatical bundle for about $60, with the games averaging about $20 to $30 per game in their individual value).

But I feel like gaming is gonna be more expensive than the past especially if you are a Nintendo fan who's gonna have to pay close to full price to play the games. Those type of games I would play immediately once I buy them though. (Case in point Mario Kart World which I'm hoping I can pre-order the Switch 2 bundle next week).

I dont really buy games day 1 but if I do, it'll be for games I would play day 1 (case in point with Super Mario Bros Wonder and Super Mario RPG back in 2023 - got them both day 1 and beat them both within a month or two).

Other examples would be GTA6 which I plan to get day 1 and Kingdom Hearts 4 (if I catch up to the series, right now I'm a few games behind so if KH4 comes out, I'll just wait it out like I did with KH3 and bought it when it was $20).

15 year old account by the way. I guess an average of $23 a year.

It's this much which is a lot considering how much I've gotten from sites like Humble and Fanatical though I do buy much, much less games and bundles than I used to. I've increasingly shifted over to the sensible position of only buying a game if I'll play it right away or know for sure that I'll play it at some point later. With how huge my library is that doesn't happen too often nowadays.

Sorry about the offtopic, but $20,000 for a funeral? Are these normal prices in the US?

My Mom died 3 years ago and the total costs were below €8,000, even with the 30-year fee for a double-grave.
When my Dad died the following year, his funeral costs were below €5,000 (since we already paid his grave fees).

Unfortunately yes, to the point people who couldnt afford it are looking into cremation due to how expensive burying is.

We buried my dad in India because that is what he wanted.

The travel costs to ship his body was $5,000

I had the choice of either shipping his body in a bag which would have been free or in a casket (cheapest was $2,000) - I chose the casket.

The services (embalming, death certificate, video streaming, facilities, etc) cost $10,000

So more like $17,000 but my mom had to go to India to deliver the body (her plane ticket was $3,000, would have been $2,000 but there was an issue with the ticket booking and had to cancel it, buying a next day ticket cost another $1,000 so which is why it was $3,000) and do the funeral there (which cost another $1,000 including the service and the casket because the American Casket was too big for the graves in India).

Despite all that cost, the price would have been the same because apparently buying a grave cost between $7,000 to $10,000 depending on where, the further away, the cheaper but it was in different city so not really worth it....wouldnt been right to bury him alongside strangers especially after he asked for years to be buried alongside my grandma and our other ancestors at our church in India (hundreds of years of ancestors are all buried at a specific plot of land at the church).

(I couldnt go because my wife was pregnant and almost due - my daughter was born 3 weeks after my dad passed and literally 2 days after my mom came back from India/funeral).
