Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can Nintendo turn Switch 2's pricing disaster around? And how?

Imagine this scenario. You're a Kyoto-based gaming corporation coming off of a massive success with your home/portable hybrid console with detachable controllers. A lot of hype is surrounding it's successor and so far everything is going well. The hardware is impressive, the games are impressive, even the price of the system is fairly affordable given the power. Everything is going well so far... Except for one problem. The biggest launch title you have, a Kart racer staring an Italian plumber, costs $80. And people don't find out about this until after your big presentation. And given that you haven't really said or shown anything so far to justify this high price tag, people are outraged. Demand on streams to "DROP THE PRICE", accusing you of being "greedy" and "anti-consumer". So your complete and utter failure to properly communicate pricing info to potential customers has now created a massive PR nightmare, and is dampening the hype of your new system.

Point being, how do you think Nintendo can turn this pricing mess around, and do you you think they can turn it around. Those saying Switch 2 will be another Wii U disaster or 3DS blunder. No. Switch 2 can easily be salvaged IMO. All Nintendo has to do is come clean and explain their pricing situation on games, and maybe even walk back pricing on some of them.

I dont know. There are so much misinformation going around. Ive seen several people claim that no Switch 2 cart has a game on it and they are all game key cards. Nintendo keep staying silent and the misinformation just grows by the minute.

There's no pricing disaster, there's just a lot of stupidity going around. Anyone who believes that Mario Kart World cannot justify its price tag doesn't have to wait long until the game gets its own Direct.

We have it seen it time and time again that Nintendo makes announcements that face controversial reception and then stays silent, only to then come out and allow its fans to own the trolls and haters on the internet with very little effort.

Let's not forget that everything around the Switch 1 was supposedly a pricing disaster as well.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

The physical games without any game on them, are labled as such (Game-key title/card).
It then allows you to download the game from nintendo, once inserted into the Switch 2.

That doesn't mean all nintendo games will be like this.
Most probably won't, its jut 3rd parties being cheap arses going for cheap storage solutions instead of buying say a 64gb one.
Sony and Xbox have done simular stuff (and also 3rd party).

The weird stuff to me, is the claim that some Switch 2 titles, will only have Switch 1 game in there, and will need a digital download patch, to run the Switch 2 version.  Supposedly this is what the new Zelda games are getting.  You buy that 69$/79$ game, and its a switch 1 cartridge and game in there.
It requires you to go online, and install the game and patch it, before you can run it at higher resolutions ect.

People are like, why? Couldn't I just get a old Switch 1 cartridge and pay the 10-20$ upgrade fee instead then? and yeah.... you could.
So those Switch 2 physical boxes (for the zelda games), are kinda of meh (for collectors imo).

I do think things will work out in the end regarding Switch 2. But you have to admit the way they've handled the pricing info and decisions has been very sloppy. It's not just fans bitching about "$80 Mario Kart lol" it's the fact that Nintendo failed to talk about Switch 1 games getting free performance and features updates on Switch 2, instead focusing on "Switch 2" edition games, which made people think that they are going to charge for all your updates. Or the fact that they completely neglected to mention that some Switch 2 edition upgrades will be free for NSO + Expansion Pack subscribers. It's their whole handling of the narrative ATM that should rightfully be called out.

Also the misinformation extends to the price point itself. The moment people heard of the 80$ games, lots went into assuming or declaring that every Switch games were at the 80 bucks price point which is not true when you look at DK Bananza of course.

Also lest, the OP forget, the MK World Switch 2 Bundle litteraly prices the game as a 50$ add-on, which is is in true sense of the word, a good deal. This is litteraly gonna sell out quite easily.

The separated software option is where it's at but I'm also asking myself if the 80$ isn't exactly where it's at because of the bundle option being much cheaper than standalone software option. Feels like there's some subsidizing being done here.

Also, some guys on Twitter missreported the 90€ physical price tag in Europe as a 90USD pricetag for physical games in the US.

The communication integrating a shit ton of asterisks and discrepancy in pricing confused people enormously. Honestly, not surprised they haven't confirmed any price point for software in Canada so far.

Its out of their hands.
Switch 2, is sold at break even point in Japan, ~335$.
Toss in 46% tariffs, and that's 490$ for just the cost of making the unit.
Then there is shipping, storage, stores that sell them wanting to make some profits selling them... ect.

Its out of their control.  The 550$ is likely going to be something american consumers will have to live with.

The game prices? They could just lower it to 70$.
Like lets not kid ourselves, Nintendo did not spend 250-300$ million making Mario Kart World.
Probably a 1/3rd or so of that.

They don't need to sell it at 80$ to make back their money invested on that game.
Plus Mario Kart games sell really well, like they can basically expect 30million copies sold of it.

All Nintendo need to do, is go "price of console is 550$ because of tariffs".
Game is being set at 70$ in the US.... we're eating a small loss to offset tariffs on the game.

PR is turned around.

I am quite sure they mentioned free performance upgrades in passing after they highlighted Switch 2 Edition games. Likewise, they showed the Zelda game upgrade packs as perks for NSO members.

The only thing that is miscommunicated on Nintendo's end are the physical versions of Switch 2 Edition games where the wording is up to interpretation.

What has happened is that the vast majority of gamers on the internet could once again not wait to dissect all information and had to rush to the keyboards or make videos. This widespread recklessness and stupidity is something that no company can solve. Switch 2 is also not launching next week, it's launching in two months. Nintendo is right to let the dust settle a bit, because if they responded immediately, they would convey that they are panicking. Which is what Microsoft did after the Xbox One reveal and made everything just worse. The additional difference is that Microsoft had reasons to panic whereas Nintendo has not.

Let the simpletons dig their own holes.

Oh they can correct course but what has really screwed them above all else is their unwillingness to do first party sales and have rolling sales on the digital store really regularly, sales up all the time. That and their games do not come close to feeling premium enough for the price. I'm not sure they can easily or quickly gain people's trust because of the unwillingness to do good digital sales but over time they can correct anythjng. It's the digital age, nothing is set in stone. They could return from a PS3 moment so much faster than Sony did especially since their games biggest currency is ideas and not money at all, they could be putting out a Mario every two years, A proper Zelda every 3 along with loads of new IP and so on for very little cost, they just aren't but if they fail like the PS3 or Wii U they'll be forced into quick action and you'll see a much better Nintendo in no less than two years, if you're a Nintendo fan and have any self interest or value your money the best thing you can do is not buy in for about the length of time.

Hyperbole for sure, but legit... absolutely not.
