It's Rotoscoped meaning filmed and then painted over but I still think it counts as it was achieved using a vomputer and works so well considering the plot of the film is about dreams.

Have you watched "A Scanner Darkly". Works great there as well as the main character is in a drug haze all movie.

Most impressive visual effects: for CGI I would say Interstellar (2014), for practical effects 2001 Space Oddyssey (1968)

Oh yeah, A scanner darkly is way better and it's actually a good film.

The transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London is pretty damn good for the early '80s.

The Substitutiary Locomotion battle at the end of Bedknobs and Broomsticks. For a 1971 movie, the effects were incredible. They managed to make those armors moving something believable.

When it comes to CGI, Life of Pie was way ahead of its time all the animals in that film were visual effects. The Perfect Storm also had some impressive GCI effects for its time even though it lost to the first Gladiator in the best Visual Effect category at the Academy Awards. When it comes to practical effects The Thing and the first RoboCop movie stand out. Also, when it comes to wire work Crouching, Tiger Hidden Dragon is still my favorite movie that uses it a lot.

about dreams?  that was interesting take on the movie.  I thought that it was just about different points of views and philosophy.  But yeah, i like rotoscoped stuff, the bakshi films are the GOATs of that

Tbh. I don't remember. It's been a long time.

Lotta great picks here!

In terms of sheer realism, my pick for the top spot is between Dune Part 1 & 2, Avatar: Way of Water, and The Creator.

All three manage the difficult task of making the CG look genuinely naturalistic and believable instead of just like really good computer graphics.

The original Jurassic Park also stands out as holding up amazingly well for a more than 30 year old film and being a huge leap forward in its time, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy also blew my mind back in the day.

I don't think enough credit is given to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for featuring five main characters that are CGI, including a lot of scenes that are entirely made in computer graphics that look every bit as real as the rest of the film, and even remain consistent with the film's tone and cinematography. And the incredible range of emotion that is given to Rocket is something I haven't seen done at all with any other CGI character ever, certainly none as convincingly.

OK this is going to be pretty simple but Lord of the Rings return of the king

Both Avatar films are visually impressive/gorgeous imo. Shame the writing quality does not match the visual spectacle.
