Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is the Switch really more of a secondary system rather than a primary system?

Is the Switch more of a secondary system?

No, the Switch is more of... 20 24.69%

No,Switch is just as much... 41 50.62%

Yes, Switch is more of a ... 16 19.75%

Switch is almost entirely... 4 4.94%

Total:81

Entirely depends on your own gaming habits. There is zero reason a Switch couldn't be your primary gaming device.

Having said that evidence would suggest in general more people use PlayStation as a primary gaming device considering PlayStation generates far more revenue per user than Nintendo. In the previous fiscal year Sony made over 2.2 Trillion Yen in just Software Revenue, Nintendo made 1.6 Trillion Yen revenue in that year with Hardware, Amiibo and Merchandise lumped in.

Far more money is being spent by PlayStation users on video games suggesting they are using it as their primary gaming device.

It depends. There are people who don't have other consoles, so Switch would absolutely be their primary system. And there are those who might have a PlayStation or Xbox but really love Nintendo games and play some third-party games on Switch.
For those of us who play plenty of games, it's common to have Switch as a secondary system. PS4 was my primary system from 2019-2022, with PS5 as my primary from 2022-present. Switch was my primary from 2017-2019.

Yup, this is the answer. Switch was my primary system from 2019 to 2022, when I bought it to play the 2017 and 2018 games as well as Wii U games I never played. After 2023 I felt Switch got stale, with outdated graphics and games that look more of the same, last year a played a total of only one new game on Switch

Then the PS5 got released, it become my primary system, and it has been the case for the last 3 years. However I already have catch up all games I wanted to play on Playstation, and I'm now only following the schedule and waiting for new games. The only game I'm currently planning to buy this year is Ghost of Yotei, Sony line up is getting really barren and uneventful too

Now, I built a good PC, and it probably going to be my main platform for the next years, mainly to play games that work better with keyboard and mouse and free online, like simulation games, MMOs, and also other older games I can buy for cheaper compared to PS5

I think eventually Switch 2 will be my main platform too, once it gets enough exclusives

Switch really is where gaming is at right now, and soon Switch 2 will be the main console where gaming is at.  PS5 only gets a few games each year that are not also on PS4.  PS5 is kind of a pathetic platform (and X|S is even worse).  To me PS5 gamers look a lot like N64 gamers from back in the day.  The main gaming platform has shifted to a different company, but they haven't realized it yet.

In 2024, the PS5 got: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Star Wars Outlaws, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Black Myth: Wukong, Helldivers 2, Tekken 8, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Silent Hill 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Indiana Jones, Astrobot, Dragon's Dogma 2, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Persona 3 Reloaded, and Stellar Blade

PS5 is actually where gaming is happening right now. I don't even like half of the list, but it's clear that there are plenty of games for all different tastes

It's true that only a few of them are exclusives, but the only other platforms for these games are PC and Xbox. PC is huge, and many of these games are actually bigger on PC than on PS5, but gaming PCs are expensive. Meanwhile, Xbox is simply not competitive, and console gamers are favoring PlayStation this generation

The next argument is "but... but... but... those are on PS4 too" indeed support the argument of PS5 success: In fact, 42% of PS5 purchases are registering as new accounts, meaning there is a significant user base replacement. You can also read: There is still plenty of people playing on their PS4 that are waiting to upgrade, this bound positively for PS5 future life sales

The PS5 will easily surpass the 100 million mark, and outselling the PS4 is not off the table. N64 sales fell off a cliff in its fourth fiscal year when sales were already far from stellar and completely died in the fifth fiscal year simply because there was nothing left to play. Obviously not the case here

I've seen you repeat this "PS5 is the new N64" since 2021 I think, it's time to let it go man

You need to get out of your bubble. The top 4 best selling games by revenue in the USA last year aren't even on the Switch. The amount of gigantic titles that have skipped the Switch is huge. It's fine to have Switch as your primary platform, but to claim that Switch is where gaming as a whole is at and that other platforms are pathetic is so far removed from reality. Nintendo themselves are the only ones pushing huge numbers on the Switch. Your personal likes and dislikes have made you completely lose perspective, Switch is just a part of a humongous industry.

In 2024 alone you have massive titles like College Football, Helldivers 2, Black Myth Wukong, Palworld and Black Ops 6 all 20m+ sellers (or definitely on their way there) skipping Switch.

It is rare that I would choose to play a multiplatform game on Switch if I could play it on PlayStation. Basically only use it for exclusives.

Nintendo's online setup is still unsatisfactory.

You guys should be arguing with the other poster that agrees that the PS5 is pathetic, but swears N64 was this super impressive console way better than the PS5.

Discourse about complaining about a console's library is often frustrating and nonsensical.

People say "PS5 has no games" and that's a lot of hyperbole. PS5 has a huge library. They say the same thing about Xbox One and Xbox Series despite their huge libraries.

Wii U had more of a reason I guess to make that claim, but there were still hundreds of digital games (admittedly some were meh to shovelware) and some Nintendo games worth playing. Wii U is perhaps the only console in relatively recent years (and maybe Wii before it) that is a tough sell as a primary system. PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series all can be primary platforms for a user.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

The thing is, Fortnite alone is bigger than stuff like CoD. That is what many people are missing, the biggest third party games these days is stuff like Fortnite, Apex etc, games that came out on Switch. So that is why Switch basically had the really important games that they needed to have to hit it out big.

I mean using that argument, PS5 is missing games like Mario Kart 8 deluxe that will sell over 80 million copies. Isn't it a big blow for the PS5 to miss out on such games? Why is it only a blow for Nintendo to miss out on those big selling games to PS but not the other way as well?

Of course Mario Kart 8 is one of the biggest games there is, but saying that Switch is "really where gaming is at" and is the "main gaming platform" when most publishers barely sell titles on it is ridiculous. It's an absolutely laughable statement.

Switch can be someone's primary gaming platform but to suggest it's the primary platform for the industry takes copious amounts of koolaid.

GTA 6 which will be one of, if not the biggest game launch of all time is coming this year for goodness sake. How can switch be "really where gaming is at" while missing almost every major title by anyone who isn't Nintendo.

Switch is an incredible system with incredible games and has had basically unparalleled success but people need to get some perspective. The video games industry is monumentally bigger than just Nintendo.

There s no singular platform where "gaming is at" and to compare the PS5 to the N64 is unbelievable.
