Forums - Movies & TV - Tim Burton's Batman

I'm in my 20s so these movies came out more than 10 years before I was even born.

I watched them last week, and man they were so good. Can't believe it holds up fairly well today and the atmosphere of Gotham is just incredible.

Oh and of course Danny Elfman's theme for batman is just perfect.

This has to be my favourite part. The way batman comes down, the music, and when he's stalking Jack.

Batman (1989) is the best Batman movie. Great stuff. My brothers and I used to quote it a lot when we were kids.

Returns is pretty good too from what I recall, but I've not watched that for a while.

I really liked these films as a kid. Now that I watch that clip above, I'm viewing it with a more critical eye to see what I didn't consider as a kid.
For example, when Batman jumps down at 2:39, he doesn't have the grapling hook attached to his belt. But when it cuts to a closeup of the belt, its there.

I probably haven't watched these films in over 20 years now, but I imagine I'd still find them very entertaining.

Wish they'd kept Tim Burton for the next two films. Those instead had a lot of neon sign colors, which made for a very different atmosphere.

As time goes on, it only seems to get better. It was the perfect mix of comic book feel and gritty, mature themes. Not too light, not too dark. Just right.

For me Batman Returns is still the best Batman movie.
I'm not quite as happy with the first one, I do prefer the two Dark Knight films - but 4th place still makes Batman above average Batman film.

I love Tim Burton's movies - just the atmosphere and overall design vibes with what I like. (Not just the Batman movies)

Tim Burton's Batman movies were my most favorite until The Dark Knight.

The first one was good, Returns is alright too but got a bit silly by the end (Penguin army with no people on the streets).

If you weren't around in 1989 you kinda missed out because Batman (1989) was such a massive, massive event, I don't think I've seen a movie where its presence was almost everywhere, everyone was wearing Batman t-shirts and the logo was everywhere, comic book stores saw a massive boom in sales, the Prince song was being played frequently on radio/MTV, the toys were sold out, etc. etc.

Both Tim Burton Batman films are goated.

I love those films. And I also like the darker tone/dark comedy of the 1990s superhero/comic films that followed (Darkman, Spawn, Blade, TMNT, The Crow), although, I generally begin the trend with Robocop by Paul Verhoeven.

I love this scene too, good music choice, Rick James and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I now wanna watch them again. I didn't find them all that great when I was a kid, I wonder would that change now. I suspect they'll be good in a campy sort of way
