Forums - Gaming - Playstation needs a big showcase urgently.

I created this thread to discuss the terrible situation that sony's gaming division is in.

Concord seems to be a failure. Astrobot is going to be a great game, but it takes a lot more games. Studios like Bend studio, naught dog, santa monica have not yet shown any of their projects and we don't have any news of the games that will be released in 2025. Even Nintendo, which is already at the end of the generation, has more games announced than Sony.

AAA game development takes 5-6 years minimum these days. Especially since the games that the studios you named make, cost hundreds of millions to make. They're going to come. It's during lull times like this first party wise that Sony depends on third party partnerships (Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, FF7 Rebirth, etc.) along with surprise hits like Helldivers 2 and no doubt Astro Bot will be a hit as well.

The last thing Sony has had is a quiet 2024. I expect we'll get a lot of announcements from Sony first party in 2025. Maybe even during the announcement of the PS5 Pro we'll get a sneak peek at some of the projects they're working on.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Nintendo and Sony have very different strategies, and frankly those strategies are paying off just fine for both of them.

Nintendo pretty much puts out a game every month, some of them are huge, but a lot of them are smaller titles.

Sony usually puts out a couple of huge titles every year.

I think 2023 was a pretty garbage year, but 2024 has been great for them. (Stellar Blade, Helldivers, Rise of the Ronin, with Concord, Astro Bot, Horizon Lego, Until Dawn still coming.) Whereas 2023 was pretty much just Spider-Man 2.

I expect they'll have a showcase to show off their big games for next year, in September.

We have no idea what most PS studios are working on at the moment and in what stage of development they are. We know Guerilla, Insomniac and Santa Monica, Polyphony are doing fine. And studios like Bluepoint and House marquee will most likely not release a game for 2026, due to dev times getting longer.

But the total lack of communication what studios like Sony Bend, Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog are working on is odd. Since Sony is not known to announce large games a few months in advance. Perhaps we will get a presentation in september. Although that could also be fully focused on the pro and the third party games that release this year it can run in 4k.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Sony has been moving towards a sparser release schedule with higher budgets per title for almost a decade now, and it has worked out well for them in terms of income. So long as they have at least one big seller per year, they seem to be satisfied, since even third party multiplat games tend to help them out more than Xbox. And honestly, I think they have 2024 covered by these standards.

Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies, PS5 versions of The Last of Us 2 and Until Dawn are likely to be profitable, and Astro Bot seems to be eagerly anticipated by many.

Do they? Off the top of my head this is what is published by Sony this year:
Helldivers 2
Stellar blade
Concord
Astro-bot
Rise of the ronin
Lego horizon

However I do agree that we need to see what PS studios is working on. Although astro bot and lego horizon were only announced a few months before release. Perhaps this is the strategy for 2025 as well?

no, I don't think so.

That said, I'm sure there'll be something around September.

I mean, I'd like one, but I don't think it's a requirement.

They said they were pivoting to two or so big games a year and that was years ago, we are seeing the results of that now. Leadership has changed since then but not recently enough for them to develop a rooster of games if they intend to bring back the ps4 exclusive bombardment again. Like, we are looking at a strong end of gen/cross gen period or perhaps they intend to stick to not releasing so many big titles and they fall off with ps6 like they did early ps3.

They are relying on third party to carry PS5 hardware. Can't say it's not working, the sales are good. But they should improve their first party output otherwise PC growth will eat more and more their marketshare

They need to stop releasing only big budget cinematic games and try to release some smaller games sometimes
