Forums - Nintendo - If Nintendo waits a long time for a Switch successor, what do you think will happen?

Well if they are just focused on making profital hardware no reason for switch 2 to release till 2025. I mean we have never seen a console sell like this with out discounts and why would they wanna end it unless they wanna go after Sony marketshare. The hardware and software is on fire.

Ideally, you want to transition while your brand is still hot, not wait until its dying. You don't want to end up in a position where your next system is still a while away but your current one is running out of steam.

Personally I don't think when is that important.  It needs to be priced right and have a good lineup.  BC would help too.  I think Nintendo needs to target $350, maybe $400.  Many are predicting $500...  I think it bombs if over $400.

Yea i just don't see where switch 2 fits in 2024. The oled switch is on fire at 349$ and switch 2 would basically kill it and what price will the switch 2 be.

Who said anything about Switch 2 being the same price as the OLED Switch. $399.99 is an easy price to see. Then maybe Nintendo will consider a drop on the OLED model to $299.99.

As soon as I see a price drop for switch then I think the next console is coming until then I think we are still far off. Right now switch has everything going for it. Mario movie on fire, totk is on fire, and 2d mario. Those are things I think should have launched with switch 2 if Nintendo was focused on it. I'm probably wrong who knows well see soon lol

Then you have several mario games coming out  on switch. Mario rpg, 2d mario, princess game all that shows me they are focused on switch.

When matters in that Nintendo won't want to have a period of low revenue when their current system isn't bringing in much money any more but their next one still isn't ready yet. No point having that happen when you can avoid it.

I'm kind of assuming Nintendo is in a ready state and are building stock.  Just waiting on the right time.

They can afford a longer wait than usual tbh due to having a monopoly to fall back on, I can see a March 2025 release.

I can see them taking a good time to test the prototypes and look for eventual problems to fix before the mass production. A privilege they didn't have with the hurry to replace Wii U lol, so that's maybe why we see a lot of problems with the joy cons

Also during mass production gathering stock so they don't repeat the severe stock issues they had in the beginning with Switch

We reap what we sow

As usual and even back in 2022 when the matter was discussed heavily because they hadn't much announced for a time,

The Switch is most likely coming either at the end of 2024 in earliest possibilities or early 2025. I do launching in early 2025 will make more sense from a software ready perspective. At that point, they'll have a healthy balance of software to be shown and played in it's launch window.

Switch Friend Code : 3905-6122-2909

When they launch depends on a number of things. Yes they have previously cut off sales of systems (GBA and DS) to launch a successor, but both of those times they were worried about the much more powerful Playstation portables perhaps stealing some of their market, which of course didn't really end up happening, but it spurred them to cut off two systems that were still selling well. That's not a problem right now, there is no handheld/hybird system coming out that Nintendo has to be worried about.

Presumably Nintendo has already architected the next gen and has the chips picked out and everything, and have sent dev kits to developers so that studios can be putting out games in 2025. And Nintendo of course has to start manufacturing the systems, including planning and setting up the facilities for that, which takes some time but not a super long time. And they probably want to at least have 3D Mario and MK9 ready for launch, but likely they've been working on both those games for numerous years now and could have those ready whenever they decide to launch the system. Really Nintendo probably just needs to make a firm decision on the launch period like 9 months out or something (granted I have no industry insider knowledge or experience here, but that time frame seems reasonable).

And they probably have a general time frame they are shooting for, which I think we could reasonably say is probably roughly mid-year 2024 to mid-year 2025. Nintendo can narrow down that range based on how Switch continues to sell. While the second half of last year and earlier this year it looked like Switch was finally starting to fade a bit, it seems TotK turned that around entirely and sales are much stronger than they should be following just a big game release. It sure seems like TotK (and perhaps the Mario movie as well) has brought about a resurgence of interest (in the form of new buyers) for the Switch. Switch looks totally different these past two months than it did the previous 12 months.

It sounds like Switch certainly has a 2024 lineup planned, but the one thing I would question is how much of a first party lineup do they have planned beyond say the next 12 months. They aren't gonna be starting up development on new Switch games at this point. So that is a limiting factor for extending the Switch's life, unless Nintendo is cool with just selling systems, third party games, and previously released first party games for a while and just letting Switch cruise. But more than likely, with how old Switch will be in a year, if they no longer have any first party game announcements people will stop buying the system as much and will be in wait mode for the next gen to launch.

Long way to say basically they're probably gonna go to Fall 2024 or sometime in the first half of 2025.
Even just a couple years ago lots of people were saying Nintendo needs a new system in 2022, and even just last year lots of people were saying Nintendo absolutely must have a new system in 2023. Obviously with Switch sales surging now in mid-2023 the idea of releasing a new system in the next 12 months seems pretty silly. For several years now 2024 has seemed the most likely year for next-gen, and it still did until the past couple months. If the strength of these sales continue, even just to the point of selling close to what they sold last year, 2025 definitely starts looking like a possibility.

Also, yeah, they haven't done any price cuts, and while Nintendo often doesn't do price cuts these days, they are gonna run into a problem when next gen hits of presumably the new system launching at around the OLED's price, or maybe at absolute most $50 more than that. If they expect to continue to sell Switch's in its post-life for a bit they better be planning to drop the OLED (and therefore presumbly the other models) a minimum of $50 before next-gen starts. And if they drop prices that also probably buys them a few months longer for Switch's life before they need to release the next system. But in the end, at some point they are just gonna have to pull the trigger because they are out of Switch games and have next gen games ready to release and waiting.

As stock goes I don't think that's a problem that can really be solved given the type of demand and situation Switch had it was doing record breaking numbers which in itself is impossible to anticipate plus we had the chip shortage. They can build up stock but anything close to the demand we've seen isn't likely to be solved.

Spanish leaker who leaked Metroid Dread for Switch prior to its announcement is now saying a "Spanish-based studio" has received Switch 2 dev kits.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/rumor-a-spanish-studio-has-received-switch-2-development-kits.737673/

The thing is looking at this guy's background (he's from Spain) and the fact that Mercury Steam (developer of Metroid Dread) is based in Spain ... the studio he's likely getting these leaks from is almost definitely Mercury Steam (unless he randomly guessed Metroid Dread, a cancelled project from 18 years prior being the Switch's 2D Metroid, in which case I'd suggest the guy buy a lottery ticket with that kind of luck). Also lines up with Euro-studios generally being the source for a lot of leaks.

The guy/gal states this:

"The Switch 2 development kit has arrived in Spain.

The fact that a Spanish studio already has the kit, given Nintendo's secrecy policy, is a boost in their relations and indicates that we are in the last stages before the console's presentation."

A spanish video liked by NWeedle says how "they are using the pro controller with the devkit, not the controllers because they do not want it to leak under any circumstances".

The second bit there may indicate there is something (new?) about the controller design that Nintendo does not want to leak out.
