It's because this goes way beyond gaming, and because it's kind of a big conspiracy theory that the masses clearly see happening.

The WEF and its "You will own nothing and you will be happy" used to be laughed at by many initially because it seemed way too bond villain like. Well it's clearly happening bit by bit and people obviously don't like it because of how bad it could end up.

Rent your gaming, rent your computing, rent your clothing, rent your transport, rent your residence, rent your love(r), etc, etc. That's the future plan, and it's scary as hell because of the absolute dystopia it may create.

I haven’t bought a physical game since 2018, don’t own a disc drive and very rarely ever pay full price for new games due to PSN credit being cheaper to buy than new physical copies of games. So I can’t pretend to be outraged coz well… I don’t see any of the above changing by 2028.

This was actually funny to me to read because of what I imagined while reading.  

"Rent your clothing": I don't see how that would work, maaaaaybe it's making reference to people paying the actual price in fractions? I have used black shirts since I was in college, $3 per shirt and can be used at the gym, at work, in my house and when I go out. I can't imagine renting clothes being cheaper than that lol. 

"Rent your transport": I have used public transportation all my life so I guess I'm already in that part of the dystopia lol. 

"Rent your residence": I already have a house to my name so maybe that's what makes me an extra happy person in the dystopia. 

"Rent your lover": First thing that appeared in my head was the japanese guy who married Hatsume Miku and how the service ended and his hologram went away forever, then I thought about how a lot of dudes pay onlyfans and do sexting with the agency of the models. That said this is actually the easiest to avoid, putting an effort to meet people isn't that hard. 

I obviously understand the point but still it was a fun ride. 

This is a conspiracy though. The industry didn't kill DVDs/Blueray/CDs...  Consumers did. No one buys music any more because the abundance of streaming is easier and more flexible. When iTunes dropped people stopped buying CDs. When Spotify dropped people stopped buying digital music and instead streamed it.

A lot of these things are singularities because human behaviour typically leans in the direction of convenience & abundance.

I think People really ought to focus attention on digital rights management/regulation etc instead of hoping they die or shouting into a cloud.

I do think there is hope in that physical things become novel again (see Vinyl) etc 

I agree with the digital rights management/ regulation point. This should be the focal point, and can only hope governments do better with this.

Sony announced retailers will offer options for buying games outside from PS Store, so they have a defense against the monopoly claim, but it's still very worth it to try legal action, specially with the dynamic pricing thing as well.

That's true. It's not like digital was significantly cheaper than physical. You can't even claim companies were placing a thumb on the scale just to raise prices later.

Optical media being increasingly obsolete didn't help either. 50-100 GB storage, and especially the 50 MB/s reads, look very mundane compared to solid-state storage and even hard disks. If it had advanced just half as fast as Moore's Law, we'd have a format with >1 TB disks with 700 MB/s reading speeds by 2020, enough for tons of uncompressed/redundant assets and probably enough to stream on the fly.

Instead, since the PS3, we had to deal with installs and extra storage requirements, etc., which made a lot of people realize, what's even the point?

Not only gaming related companies, but even junkfood chains like KFC and Domino's are now mocking Playstation in their social media.

Truly a disaster for the brand image. Very deserved.
