There is not much 3rd party games published by Nintendo, is it ?

Like GTA Trilogy for eg, I believe it sold a great amount (it was dicounted)

At least as of last year, 20% of game sales on the Nintendo Switch are third party.

No, 50% in units.

it's not surprising that cracking the 1m mark represents a high hurdle.

Don't forget these titled crossing the 1 million mark are the 3rd party titled published by Nintendo, not in genral.

Like Monster Hunter Rise isn't part of it.

Where do you even get this idea?

Any game published by Nintendo they consider first party and report it's sales if it crosses 1mil in the running fiscal year just like any other first party game. They mention how many third party games sold over 1mil in the fiscal year every quarter. Do you think all of these games, 8 in the current fiscal year, were somehow published by Nintendo but they didn't bother to actually name them?

They reported Octopath Traveller's sales like any first party game. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is the only technically third party game that Nintendo piblished anywhere that sold over 1mil in this fiscal year and they didn't specifically name it because it would have needed to sell over 1mil in the regions they published it in.

I feel like many, including Nintendo themselves, had unrealistic expectations of how Switch would perform after the 2020/2021 peak years.

Every system eventually declines with age, and the Switch isn't magically exempt from that. It was inevitable that eventually most of the audience would already have one and saturation would kick in.
18 million in a system's 6th year is a very strong number. While the two don't line up exactly due to release timing, PS4 sold 14 million in 2019.

All Nintendo have do now is be smart; don't try to ride out the Switch until it stagnates and the brand's appeal sours. Send it off on a strong note, then get a Switch 2 out in 2024 that isn't weighed down by some stupid gimmick nobody wants or a confusing name.

@curl-6 Exactly. Though I've wanted a Switch Pro this year and then Switch 2 in 2025, I am starting to agree that they will not to a Switch Pro and just release a successor in 2024. The Switch probably won't surpass the PS2 & DS as a result, but it will still come respectably close.

If they market it as more of the same but more powerful with a killer launch lineup (Mario Kart Day 1, Animal Crossing the following Spring, Pokemon Gen 10 the following holiday, for example), they have a recipe for success. The PS5 & XSX are doing respectably well compared to their predecessors despite not having crazy gimmicks. Nintendo should take note of that. They could still do gimmicks within in the games themselves or through optional external hardware (like Labo & Ring Fit).

Yeah the hybrid form factor is enough of a selling point, there's no good reason to gamble everything on a gimmick, it's not worth the risk of it blowing up in their faces again if they get it wrong.

People love the Switch concept. Just release another one that's better in every way, and has the next Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, etc, and call it Switch 2.
Couldn't be easier.

@ShadowLink93 They're about to sell more Pokemon games on Switch than the total sales of all Wii U games. I wish the Switch Pokemon spin-off had better sales figures though, especially compared to the DS days.
