I feel like many, including Nintendo themselves, had unrealistic expectations of how Switch would perform after the 2020/2021 peak years.

Every system eventually declines with age, and the Switch isn't magically exempt from that. It was inevitable that eventually most of the audience would already have one and saturation would kick in.
18 million in a system's 6th year is a very strong number. While the two don't line up exactly due to release timing, PS4 sold 14 million in 2019.

All Nintendo have do now is be smart; don't try to ride out the Switch until it stagnates and the brand's appeal sours. Send it off on a strong note, then get a Switch 2 out in 2024 that isn't weighed down by some stupid gimmick nobody wants or a confusing name.
