I think Xenoblade 3 is one of the better Switch games and it definitely is cementing itself as one of Nintendo's better new IP, but yeah, it would be nice to get a new Zelda or Mario platformer since a new Mario Kart isn't happening probably until the next Switch model either.

Would maybe like to see Switch successor support VR or something, just bring some kind of new angle to some Nintendo IP, it's been a while.

Play some Indie games, eshop stuff. Don't rely solely on the "big" franchises.

I mean that's what they're there for: To tide you over. I'm playing Little Noah and Frogun right now and having a blast with both.

The indies have been so amazing this generation. Currently playing a title called Autonauts and let’s just say that the depth to this game is almost overwhelming. In some ways I wish it was already over because the next step is going to be very intensive and exhausting, but I know if I stick with it it will also be very rewarding. I just hope a major developer is watching what these indies do and present a much more refined version of the same experience. Even better yet, I hope that the support they receive in the Switch allows them to invest in better tech to fully flesh out their ideas.

So many gems among the indie selections. And there’s always a few dozen new additions to look at each week.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I thought that only having one system and not both a handheld one and a stationary one would net more games to that one system from Nintendo.
That is not the feeling I've gotten from this generation. Might not be correct to call them stale, but something always seem to be missing.

In my opinion, I do feel like Nintendo has become a bit boring as of recent. I'm missing those times where I was super hyped for Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8, even stuff like BOTW, Mario Maker & Smash when they were about to release. Alot of the games releasing this year, while they're not bad but they just aren't really hype cause they're the type of games and experiences I've already seen before. I honestly feel like Splatoon 3 has little reason to exist with Splatoon 2 already on Switch and I already know what to expect so I'm not really hyped at all, I've never been a Pokemon fan to be hyped for Scarlet & Violet and even if I was, Pokemon games at this point release so frequently that its harder to get hyped for them especially since the more recent Pokemon games haven't brought anything new that's hype to the table. I guess Kirby may have been more hype but I'm not a big Kirby fan so it wasn't a big deal for me. And the games I was more hyped for this year being Mario Strikers & Switch Sports ended up being underwhelming experiences which is a shame. To be honest I'm really missing those major Nintendo games that we were seeing somewhat In the beginning of the Switch's life as well as the 2014/2015 timeframe of the Wii U where we were seeing brand new & original heavy hitters like MK8,Smash Bros, Splatoon 1 when it was first introduced, Mario Maker, 3D Mario, and BOTW, really the only game that's coming close to that level of hype in BOTW2 but I haven't really felt it yet by how little has been shown by the game. I want to get hyped for games that got me into Nintendo in the first place and I haven't been feeling that with Nintendo recently honestly as I feel like its been too long of a wait without a new 3D Mario or new Mario Kart & the Booster Course pass hasn't really helped fulfill that need tbh. So yea I'll say as of recent Nintendo has been a little bit boring.

Part of it is due to the fact that HD development does take longer and none of the Nintendo handhelds before the Switch were HD. But yea I haven't felt it as much as I thought either as the Switch's first-party output doesn't feel that much different than the Wii U IMO.

Also to be fair, Nintendo's first-party output on a lot of their handhelds wasn't great as the GBA mainly depended on SNES/NES ports/remakes, the DS didn't have great 1st party support either especially after the first few years, the 3DS was sort of the exception as Nintendo was pretty much forced to improve their first party output on 3DS since many 3rd Parties failed to support the 3DS compared to the DS/GBA/GB.

The dropped support from the handheld exclusivity like what Atlus did to 3DS porting like 20 exclusives and Sega porting exclusive Shinobi etc other 3rd party exclusive handhelds are not there neither like Project X zone series and Professor layton is no more etc.

A lot of it had to do with Professor Layton being a product of its time. When it debuted the adventure/puzzle genre was on the cusp of a Renaissance and touch screen gaming was a fairly new thing—DS was hot and the rise of iOS gaming was still years away. By the time Layton’s Mysterious Journey released a decade later, the series already felt like a dinosaur; it bombed on all platforms (including the Switch). It’s not that the genre died, it’s that it expanded and diversified significantly thanks to the indie explosion and vast increase in touch screen gaming. Layton went from being one of the biggest fish in a small pond to a carp in the ocean. Another issue is the price of Mysterious Journey was 5-10 times higher than other similar games, some of which were getting better reviews. Level 5 ended the series.

I have mixed feelings on the part I put in bold. On the one hand, it is objectively true that making games in HD is harder and uses more resources. On the other hand, Nintendo is known as the biggest and most prestigious first party developer in the world. HD games have existed on consoles since 2005. Plus a lot of Nintendo games on the Wii had the production value you'd expect on other systems, just at a lower resolution. Mario Galaxy comes to mind, as it's a game which would not look out of place on a PS3 or Xbox 360. Should we really be giving Nintendo this out? I think it's more the limitations of the Switch hardware (making 2022-quality games on what amounts to early-2010s quality hardware).

Never been a fan of the trend of adding “J” to “RPG” during the PS2 eras. The J seems superfluous, just because RPG devs outside of Japan started getting bigger.

I mean, we don’t designate JFighter, JPlatformer, JAction, or anything like that.

Just my unsolicited 2 cents :)

It signifies a Japanese "spin" on the role playing genre... Because prior to that most RPG's had Japanese underpinnings... That is, until PC RPG's started to get ported to console... So developers started to coin the term to highlight a difference.

But I definitely remember the term being thrown around in the SNES and PS1 era, it was just far less common.
