Forums - Sales Discussion - The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch

At first, it was 155M, then 157M~159M, then 160M, then 160.6M and now 161M. Soon people will start talking about 161.5 or something like that

It was never 155M, it was always "more than" 155M, or "over" 155M, 157-159M was the most mentioned range between 2014 and 2024. So 10 years.

The theoretical maximum of 161.8M and everything above 159M was only mentioned rarely when calculating and speaking of how much could the PS2 sell in the best case scenario.

Now is not 161M. 161M is the number where there won't be any doubt that the Switch outsold PS2, since Layden confirmed that the 160.6M number was on point for the production units. But if Switch end up somewhere close to that there may be some people come with the theoretical maximum of 161.8M. So in order to shut all mouths and no one can doubt the Switch 1st place, 162M is the golden number.

And just like that the goalpost is adjusted lol! The desperation is real.

Well, 155,000,001 is more than 155M and they are pratically the same thing. If the Switch had managed to break the 155M it should have considered the most sold console, same thing if the Switch had crossed the 160M mark when the goalpost was there. The "more than" expression is just an excuse for not settng the sales in a fixed number and be able to play around with units sales by convinience

What I find it funny is that people demand that the Switch prove its sales numbers to claim the number 1 position but are okay with vague terms like "more than" or "at the range of maximum of" for the PS2. The oficial PS2 sales is "more than 160M". If the Switch manages to sell two units more than that number it should be considered the most sold console oficially.

Sony's numbers are fishy. We all know that. Its a shame vgchartz goes with these lies. Sony never confirmed 160 million units before it was clear, that the Switch will probably enter ~158 million airspace. Like i said if they really shipped 160 million+ theee should be a serious tax investigation.

I don't say (now) it will pass PS2, but if it comes only close to their original FC and their FC for coming FY is at least average, it will happen. I can see Sony pumping it to 165 millon if the Switch surpassed 160 million but no one with a clear mind should believe them. The question will be: Where do we draw the line? Where is the point where we say: No! We do not believe that anymore! What if Nintendo came out and said: Actually we produced 164.353.489  DS systems? Who would believe them? One thing is dead sure: 155 million for the Switch is the absolute (quite low balled) floor.

At first, it was 155M, then 157M~159M, then 160M, then 160.6M and now 161M. Soon people will start talking about 161.5 or something like that

Thats true. If you read comments in certain forums, youtube... you will see that we are not the only ones doubting the numbers. If Nintendo came out and said they produced "in loving memory" of 164.355.185 DS systems i also would ask myself if they where retarded!

Sony's shipment numbers still match to what they say.

Nintendo's shipment numbers would not match 164m DS.

Likewise nobody would believe Sony if they said 164m PS2, because their shipment numbers never matched up with that.

Its obvious that they are lying. Why anounce 155,1 first, then change it to 160 million? As a tax regulator i would chek Sony's financials back for te FY 2012/13 and sue them if necessary. If 160 million was true, they would have commited a financial crime!

It was never 155,000,001, since "over" 155M was till march 2012. And the PS2 was sold for 9 more months. So it's clear the PS2 didn't sell just 1 unit in those 9 months, so Switch breaking 155M shouldn't be considered the most sold console even before 2024, when the announcement of 160M was made. It was always known that for those 9 months at least some 2M have been moved in the worst case scenario.

I am not sure that people are okay with vague terms, it's just what they have. Everyone would want to know the exact numbers, and Sony just go out and say it. As of this moment PS2 official sales are more than 160M yes, but Shawn Layden confirmed the 160.6M is real. So the Switch should manage to sell more than 160.6M. In my previous posts I talked about what Switch needs to sell in order no one can be able to doubt it, that's why I said 162M.

Sony gave us an exact number as of March 2012 (155.1 million). PS2 was discontinued after so no doubt it sold more but the issue is the adjustment was made to a figure that was already reported. You are just moving the goalpost as much as possible, 162 to shut everyone up? No one should have anything to say because Sony confirmed the highest possible at 160.6 million. Also lol at Shawn Layden confirmed 160.6 mllion was real? Shawn confirmed it is a produced number or in other words it isnt real but the desperation to protect PS2 is that ingrained. You are literally defending comparing Switch's estimated sellthrough figure according to vgc to PS2's total production figure. That's how nonsense this is and a certain fan base looks mighty sad bending over backwards to defend it.

Nintendo's shipment numbers would not match 164m DS.

Now you have flat out resorted to pushing their lie and you would absolutely believe whatever they say because it protects PS2. Sony's numbers do not add up. They reported 155 1 million as of March 2012. They are NOW reporting it as 160 million as of March 2012. Either they purposely underreported before or they are lying now. That is obviously fishy no matter how desperate Sony's white knights want to defend it. I challenge anyone to put together the data that aligns with PS2 hitting 160 million at March 31, 2012.

Nintendo would only need to do like Sony and just adjust the DS last reported figure of 154 million as of whatever date (can't remember when it was discontinued) up to 164 million for the same date.

Stop throwing me personal intentions with every of my comments. I don't have any personal intentions or bias. I said 162 to shut everyone up, not because I want to or look out for something to move the goalpost. I personally believe in the range of 160-160.6M for the PS2. But there will be people who will continue to doubt if Switch ends somewhere in between 160-161.8M. That's why I said 162, in order to no one be able to doubt it.
