29 - One of the most complicated battle systems for its genre, but allows you to completely wreck the game from the beginning if you know what you're doing.

28 - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

27 - I don't get it, this game has a 'last of the species' plot...that's actually a recurring theme in the series even though each entry repeats it.

26 - The villain has a point, his son is your rival, and it's the best entry in the series in my opinion. Can't wait till the remakes in a few years.

25 - The first time I played the original, I didn't like it all that much. some parts of the games had no frames. the entry is the remaster, which some hated but I loved!

24 - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

23 - Duane and Brand-O's most popular song.

22 - This is the weakest entry in this series, but it sold the most and was one of the best-selling game on the SNES - My favourite console.

21 - God of War (2018)

28 - This game is a perfect show that realistic graphics don't age well; meanwhile, this game looks as fantastic today as it did almost 20 years ago.

24 - The commercial for this game was absolutely gross and had nothing to do with the game except to replicate the player character's ravenous appetite.

21 - This reboot/sequel is a game that I can never get bored of, which is funny because I hated the trilogy that came before it. a near-perfect game, can't wait for its sequel.

#24 is Yoshi's Island?

#21 is God of War (2018)?

#23 Graveyard Keeper
guessed by no one
platform Switch/Linux
release year 2018
developer/publisher Lazy Bear Games/tinyBuild
genre simulation/adventure
links Wikipedia, Moby games, trailer
past years 2020: #37

Graveyard Keeper was an interesting surprise to me. The description caught me, by describing that you keep a graveyard in good condition, while also indicating a strange and morbid humour. And yes, it delivered.

The game starts with a short sequence, in which the character seemingly dies in our world, while returning home to his love. He ends up in a kinda medieval world, where he is appointed the new Graveyard Keeper in line with the Ancient Contract. Nobody here seems suprised, that out of nowhere a new Graveyard Keeper turns up. At first you are tasked with digging up a skull named Gerry. Once unearthed said skull helps you to find your footing in your tasks, while also pointing out possibilities for profit, which in turn he wants to turn into alcohol.

You have to bury the corpses you get delivered by a talking donkey, while keeping that graveyard tidy, so the quality goes up. With high enough graveyard quality the bishop allows to hold sermons. You also have a garden in which you can grow crops, which you can cook or brew beer with. And you can mine, cut down trees and getting lots of resources, which you can use in crafting more and more advanced stuff to keep everything going.

A major part is alchemy, that allows you to craft potions and embalming liquids. You can use pretty much everything as a source of alchemical substances, including the corpses and their organs.

This all is combined with an interesting story that unfolds. This world and the villagers have a past, which you can slowly uncover as you help with various problems they face. But over all is the task of your main character: get back to his own world and to his love. The tone of the story is often light, even with a dark history of this world. Expect some quite morbid jokes.

The game has a pretty artstyle, and some nice effects for a 2D game with cool lighting and weather effects. The music is quite catchy, although more titles for less repetition would have been nice.

The game has three DLCs. Breaking Dead (which is included usually in PC versions) allows you to create Zombies, which you can use to automate tasks. Highly recommended, because cutting down a tree is only fun for the first thousand times or so. Stranger Sins adds a tavern and a lot of story about things that happened 200 years ago. It is quite nice to see the ruins you encounter everywhere as actual buildings in the past. Game of Crone is just out in October and I haven't played it yet. But it says you can manage a camp and get more story about the last keeper.

One thing annoyed me: the fishing minigame is bad. I hate it. Luckily I can buy every fish I need for the story from the fisherman at the lighthouse. I also recommend to buy a teleport stone early on from the tavern owner, so you don't need to walk everywhere.

Overall this was a very enjoyable experience for me. It may be too grindy for some, or the humour too lowbrow and morbid. But if you can enjoy that, this game is very fun. It is available pretty much everywhere.

#19 The second adventure of Ashley Mizuki Robbins. This time on Wii and again as the outing on the DS the new controls are used in puzzles. Which does for the Wiimote means pointer function, not so much waggling.

Don't know the exact name, but this is the Wii entry of the Another Code series right?

As nobody guessed Graveyard Keeper, now nobody shares the lead on my guesses with Machina with 6 entries, Darashiva and The_Liquid_Laser follow with 5 each:

#22: Draw the map of the dungeon you find in a high school yourself. Guessed by The_Liquid_Laser.

#21: Silver haired maiden. Guessed by The_Liquid_Laser.

#20: Marry to get children you can send into fights to the permadeath. Guessed by The_Liquid_Laser.

#19: The second adventure of Ashley Mizuki Robbins. This time on Wii and again as the outing on the DS the new controls are used in puzzles. Which does for the Wiimote means pointer function, not so much waggling. The studio that made this game made some other great adventures as well, sadly they did go bankrupt just before the resurgence of adventures happened. Guessed by drbunnig.

#18: Ask me about Loom. Guessed by The_Liquid_Laser.

Yes exactly, Another Code R. I was a bit obvious with naming the main character, but I figured as this game nver reached america a lot here haven't even heard about it.

Could 28 be Wind Waker?

And 22... F-Zero?

Guessed by The_Liquid_Laser

One day, after some family troubles, I thought why not re-buy some stuff from the past, and give myself some happiness by reliving some old memories. So I got a cool steel Master Sword but that's beside the point. By this time, the original NES and SNES games in our family had sadly long been lost to time, but I didn't just want to get things on Virtual Console or similar services, or worse, on emulator. So I scoured eBay, "Marktplaats" which is a Dutch eBay-type site, and I went to several second-hand stores, markets and fairs. There I got the perfect NES, all complete with everything in a nice original box, and I got the games I played as a kid, all things good.

But I figured I'd take the opportunity to get some other things I never played before. 'Mega Man 2' was one of those games. I never played that game back then, but obviously its reputation precedes it. So I had the NES in my room by the tv next to my bed and night after night I'd play one of my games, and then I got to Mega Man 2, and was surprised by how fluid, fast-paced and varied the game was. The soundtrack is also stellar. I was also impressed by the non-linearity of it, you can choose the order in which you want to play levels. Your progress is then saved with an interesting password system that looks like tic-tac-toe. I wrote those passwords down as I got them, and I still have a stack of them laying around somewhere. My mission was accomplished, I got some happiness back.

  • People gush over this series' gibberish lore to make up for the lack of actual story, but I say fuck the lore - it's all about the hellish combat really. This entry makes it more fluid than ever before. And prettier too, much prettier.

I'm going to make a relatively uninformed guess and say Mortal Kombat 11.
