One of the oldest gaming series that exists, is the adventure series Zork. This series started 1977 on a PDP and was 1980 transformed into the Zork series by the company founded for this purpose, Infocom. The games back then were text adventures, meaning everything was text, you typed in your command and on the screen was shown text that described the result. Zork was for the time an incredibly successful game (for the time) and Infocom was among the greatest gaming companies. But the failure of a Lotus Notes clone (which itself was overtaken by Excel later) and the introduction of graphical adventures by different companies led to financial trouble for Infocom, and it was taken over by Activision. Activision tried to make money of their Zork-franchise they've gotten through this aquisition and as a result developed Return to Zork.

Return to Zork was the first graphical adventure in the Zork series, but it was also very unique in it's way. For starters the game used real actors and integrated these videos instead of animated sprites. This was used by other games at the time, but Activision actually took care that these scenes meshed well with the painted backgrounds, so that the video captures don't stick out. They also had a very interesting point-and-click interface. They didn't follow the standard set by LucasArts (Indiana Jones/Monkey Island) and Sierra (Kings/Space quest/Larry) games, but instead opened a graphical menu if you clicked on any interactive element in the graphic. You also could 'hold' an item in your inventory and then click, and the menu offered a lot of ways to use the item on the interactive element. This way the game retained some of the depth of the text adventures (which allowed for a lot of interactive possibilities). This and humorous flashbacks to the older games in the series (like in the image above) was made to draw in old fans.

In difference to more puzzle oriented adventures, Return to Zork has a good cast of characters which you can interact with. There are a lot of communication options, including asking about photographs you've taken from different locations or characters, audiologs or places on the map. Additionally you have a magical orb and the wizard communicating through it has a lot of comments to different situations.

This game shows a lot of possibilities for developing an adventure, which I seldomly saw used in other games. It also has an interesting story, a variety of characters and brain-teasing puzzles. In this game you can die or make choices that lead to make the game unwinnable, but the game always instantly tells you that, so that you can go back to the last safe situation.

If you wanna play the game today, you can purchase it from GOG, play it in the browser at archive.org or reuse your old copy with DosBox. A fan of point-and-click adventures should possibly give it a try.

The designers of this game knew how to make great set pieces. It is a train of memorable locations and rolling vistas. Then the game starts in the middle of the action, right in the center of one of those memorable set pieces. This scene is also the 'image' of the game. All the Uncharted games feature the most iconic locale from the game as their primary artwork and 'Uncharted 2: Among Thieves' has the derailed train dangling from an icey cliffside. This scene features as both the prologue and as a midway point after the games goes back through flashbacks, besides the box art and advertisements.

Of course this scene isn't the only memorable thing the game had to offer. Another famous one, and one that impressed me a lot, is the collapsing building. This was a great showcase of physics like I never really saw before. Luckily the game beside the flashy exterior is great as well, the characters and the story are engaging and fun, the gameplay and controls are tight and intuitive. This game was just "done", when it released. The developers really made sure that what they brought out complied with their highest standard, it shows. And this is all I really want, something that's fun, and works and is undoubtedly what the designers wanted to release.

This one always has a hard time getting guessed.

#24 - A game where you play as a beetle trying to hit notes and dodge walls in a really freaky looking place.
Hint 2 - It's a rhythm game whose developers previously worked at Harmonix.

This is the first thing I got when I looked up "thumper game meme" and I literally know nothing about this game nor Darling in the Franxx so this is all you're getting.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

So #22 wasn't guessed yet, which means second hint. Also first hint for #21.

#22: This game really only came to be because of a dare.

Hint 2: A dare because the lead producer actually wanted to just make an expansion or alteration of this game's predecessor, but that was something his director didn't want to do.

#21: One small village of indomitable ones still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for those who garrison the fortifies camps. So let's take back the country, province by province.

#25: Super Mario 3D World

Great and fun game with some awesome and creative levels and cool new power ups. The double cherry in particular is fun and confusing to use. Changes how you play the level significantly. The cat power up is pretty interesting too. It doesn't always make everything that much easier like the tanooki power up does.

I like how Bowser for once doesn't kidnap Peach, a sorely needed break for her and now you can also play as her. Meowser looks stupid, but the fight at the end is pretty fun.

The music is great too.

In general Super Mario 3D World is great. But, I don't really like it that much to be this high on my list. On it's own this game would be either very low in my top 50 or just outside.

Then why is it at #25? The reason is this:

Bowser's Fury

GOD DAMN is this good! A frigging masterpiece. I'm serious, I love Bowser's Fury. It's Awesome!

Right at the start you run down that path and come to a ship and in the distance you see a massive shadow in the distance. You come closer and then a lightning strikes and you see him, the massive king himself and you watch his spikes, eyes and hair light up with red flaming rage as he lets out a roar that shakes the ground...god...damn. Absolutely incredible.

Everything is so cheerful and full of vibrant colors with an absolutely great soundtrack. Then the music fades and is replaced with a dark and foreboding theme while the huge black shell of Bowser rises slowly higher and higher, then he starts spinning faster and faster and flies up in the air and hell breaks loose. His anger and fury is so all-encompassing that he corrupts everything, even the cats themselves turn into murderous monsters.

The theme changes to epic deathmetal as the world turns dark and the monster of monsters starts raining havoc. He has only one goal: to kill Mario. He will hunt him down and rain hellfire upon him. He is not just a background hazard, he targets Mario directly. Bowser means real business.

Everytime Fury Bowser shows up is just so epic. He is no joke, he's genuinely scary like never before. When he suddenly lands right next to Mario is terror inducing. He gave me some of the most tense and exciting Mario experiences ever, never fails in giving me an adrenalin rush. Especially when riding Plessie in the open water and Bowser land right in front of you and spews flames right at you.

When he stopps leaving after some time or when you get a cat-shine is when it gets the most tense. I was trying to get one of the hardest shines while he just kept at it. Pure unbridled fun.

When you get a giant bell and Mario turns into the biggest furry the world has ever seen comes an exciting kaiju fight that is incredibly fun. Despite Mario being so big himself now Bowser isn't in any way less imposing and scary.

The soundtrack that plays when Bowser is present and during the fights against him is some of the coolest stuff Nintendo has ever made.

The fight against him when you ride Plessie is the coolest part. Absolute fun. Second best Bowser fight ever.

The levels themselves are great. I like how after getting a shine and going away from the island amd coming back some stuff changes and you can get the next shine.

The music outside the Bowser encounters is the counter opposite, upbeat and happy. Especially great is the track that plays when you ride Plessie.

You get a contrast between two sides. The world how it usually is and the darkness that Bowser brings over it. It is the amalgamation of all the anger gathered over 35 years of getting beaten by this puny plumber unleashed upon the world. It corrupts everything.

That's what I love about Nintendo. They akways try something new and experiment. I would have never expected a Mario game like this. It's truely fantastic.

Did I say the giant kaiju fights aren't the main course in my first hint? Bowser's Fury may be just an experimental add-on to most, but to me this is the main course and an absolute success. This is how the next 3D Mario game should be.

On it's own Bowser's Fury would be way higher on this list. At least #15, maybe even top 10. I seriously love it. It's an absolute thrill ride.
