ReviewTech looks like he just hit 50.

I'm not that far from 40, fortunately people think I am much younger than I look. A guy got confused the other day when I told him I had a Genesis as a kid.

My advice to looking moderately youthful is eat better and maybe hit the gym. Also, talk about internet memes.

These people were born around 1980-1981. That might be the ideal time to be born for gaming if you live in the US. The NES went nationwide in 1987, which meant that these people would have been around 6-ish years old when that happened, which is about the time most people start playing video games. Basically, their earliest experience with video games would have coincided with the most important event in gaming history, the rise of the NES. It's an event that likely defined their entire lives.

I was 9 when my best friend got a NES. I started with Donkey Kong and Ms. Pac-Man, and had an Atari 130XE as my first gaming machine. But yeah, The Legend of Zelda was one of the most amazing games I'd ever played, and the Zelda series is still my favorite game series of all time.

This thread makes my 34 year old ass feel young...

I told many people I had a Genesis too, I'm 33 Years old people think I'm 20 - 25 in person, I was 2 years old when I owned an Nes back in 1990. My brother owned an SNES in 1999 he was 4 years old born in 1995 I think the only shock people gasp if someone owned an Atari?

We had an Atari and NES, but Genesis was the first console I actually asked for and it was a few years old at that point.

Atari was still fairly common during late 80s and a few years into the 90s. Just did a quick search and Atari had major support until 1990.

I'll be turning 30 this year

I don't like to put too much personal info online, so I'll just say that I'm in the same age group as the people mentioned in the OP.

People that are 35-42ish right now are the first people that grew up with gaming as a "thing" for their entire life. So, it makes sense that you're just now starting to notice lots of gamers hitting 40.

There definitely are lots of older gamers though. For example, my father got me into gaming in 1982. He died a few years ago, right next to his PSP. He played JRPGs almost exclusively, and was gaming regularly (with maybe an occasional slow year here and there) at least since 1982. Had he not died so young, I'm sure he'd still be gaming in his mid-60s.

Also, several years ago I met a guy in his late 70s or early 80s that had a spectacular gaming rig setup. I assumed he used it for some sort of work. But, I asked and he said that his "retirement hobby" is playing PvP CoD and Battlefield. He said it started as a suggestion from a doctor for stroke recovery.
