Facts, haters can hate, but it's Undisputed.

Not interested in more monthly payments. I buy what I want.

I really don't care for Gamepass, since if there's something I want to play I'll just buy it. Not to mention I have a big enough collection already to keep me busy for over ten years. As long as Gamepass doesn't completely replace buying your own games it's fine. If however, Gamepass does to buying games what Steam did to big box PC games, then we have a problem. If people stop buying games because "oh it's just coming to Gamepass sooner or later" then the entire industry will change for the worse. Games will be designed as "Live Services" instead of genuinely enjoyable products. We really don't need every game to become a Live Service game with hundreds in microtransactions. Anybody that wants to go the traditional model of making a good game, and selling it to consumers will have to go up against "$10 a month for hundreds of games". Millions of people paying $10 a month for hundreds of games can't replace the revenue from millions of people actually buying their own games. It's simple math.

Anyway, as long as Gamepass doesn't become so successful that it suffocates the rest of the industry, I'm all for it. Indie devs get paid very well by MS since, an Indie development budget is a drop in the ocean compared to Gamepass revenue. AAA games like Yakuza 6 that have seen their sales slow to a trickle, several years after release get a nice boost from Gamepass revenue too. Ideally, the way that Gamepass should fit into the industry goes as follows...

1. Game gets released for $60.

2. Game gets discounted to $30 a year later.

3. Game gets discounted to $15 and/or thrown onto Gamepass two or three years after launch.

The revenue from 1 + 2 + 3 is enough to keep the developers paid well, without having to resort any sort of microtransaction scheme.

It's one of the latest clever ideas to get people into paying for games that they don't own. I get the convenience, but that's how they have been stripping away our consumer rights, by selling us convenience.

You don’t actually own any digital video game you buy though.

I can buy MLB The Show for $60 and “own” it until MS or Sony decide otherwise. Or I can pay $50 for a year of GPU, get Show day one, play it for a month or so until im bored of it, then delete it and move on. And with that one game right there, I’ve already made up my investment with 12 months to go.

It’s not just convenience it’s common sense.

If I got a bunch of "free" games with one of these subscription services, then I wouldn't have the time to play them, that sort of stuff seems wasted on me. The only gaming subscription service I've ever used is for my ffxiv account.

Not for me, I think gamepass is a neat service on paper, tried it out a couple of times when it was on discount, it doesn't really fit my style of play, sometimes I won't touch some games for months or years before I get back to them or sometimes I feel like replaying them, and I don't like being on a timer in that sense, rather just buy it and get to it whenever I want, like I pretty much just tried Hellblade and Outer Worlds the couple of times I had it, the former I really disliked and the latter is something I would rather own due to the genre, there is also a very small selection for me in terms of stuff I care about playing, and with indie games I also just rather buy the game as a sign of support.

It is just not worth it for me. My backlog is so large it doesn't make sense to subscribe to a service like that. For the same reason, I also don't really buy new games. I only buy older games at a steep discount, so there is no way any of these services would save me any money.

Bold: I'm aware of that, that's why I never buy anything digital unless it's dirt cheap.

It may be common sense for you, because it works for you. I rather keep as much ownership as I can for my games.

Being in a family with 3 gamers, each with our own gaming tastes, Game Pass has been great. We got a Series X for Christmas and since it was our first XBox we had no games from past systems. Game Pass gave us hundreds of games to play from day 1. All for $31 for the first 7 months so far ($1 for first 3 months, then converted a year of EA Play to 4 months of GPU).

Your story is something some people fail to realize. So many people are all like..."I don't want a gaming subscription! I have so many games purchased from the past and present anyway that it's waste of money!" Or "I've owned an Xbox or PlayStation for years, so the services are worthless because I've played most of the games."

If I got an Xbox Series X, I would get GamePass without hesistation. I've played almost no first-party Microsoft games in my life due to way less exposure to Xbox than Nintendo and PlayStation.

So for people that think GamePass is a waste or not for them, wonderful. But there's millions of people who think GamePass has plenty to offer.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 151 million (was 73, then 96, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 57 million (was 60 million, then 67 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

At the 'other side', we got a console for Christmas when we were young and only one or two games to play at first. So we all played together as a family, taking turns, having fun together.

Nowadays, everyone is in their own space, with their own screen, watching/playing there own things. It's great...

The poll results are quite interesting, 50/50 on a gaming site. Game ownership is doomed. But it is a great deal for how long it can last. It's still an unproven business model mostly relying on the vast library of past games that were made for full price game purchases.
