It seems Jim Ryan said no to Kojima's next project (rumour).
Interesting decision. It's like saying "sorry, go check if microsoft wants to fund you instead". You are basically throwing Kojima on microsoft's hands. Death Stranding was not as successful as everyone expected but Kojima is still a big name, you are giving the chance of your competitor release a new great exclusive.

Thanks for stating the obvious Enrico. Of course Jim Ryan would know that Kojima going to ask MS was a real possibility.

Without any context (or validation of this rumour for that matter) it's difficult to ascertain anything from this. Maybe Kojima's expected budget it too high. Maybe he wanted certain allowances that Sony don't even offer their own teams.

There's a rumour that this game is episodic and cloud-based. If that is the case, then Ryan declining the project would make a lot of sense. Sony don't do episodic. They also can't do a cloud-based game.

Always glad to help!

As if the big Sony and Microsoft were the only publishers out there.

@Comments at large here: After the usual suspects spent their time shitting on Death Stranding, calling it a glorified walking simulator, and regurgitating all the usual crap about Kojima, him [allegedly] going to MS is now seen as big amazing news?

Where does the hypocrisy stops for some of you?

You don't need a Playstation to have an opinion on Death Stranding.

You don’t, but you are not an example of it.

It's not so much about what exclusives they themselves launch, it is about what exclusives buyers get to play. In terms of games, since launch, looking at a 12 month period PS5 owners will have:

1) Miles Morales

2) Demon Souls

3) Removed destruction all stars

4) Oddworld

5) Returnal

6) Ratchet & Clank

7) Horizon Zero Dawn

8) Kena

9) Deathloop

10) Ghostwrite

11) Stray

12) final Fantasy Remake Thing

Meanwhile Xbox series X will have:

1) halo Infinite

2) Forza 8

3) Scorn

4) crossfire

5) flight simulator

6)Gears Tactics

7) The Medium

8) The Gunk

9) The Ascent

10) Tunic

11) Warhammer 40k:Darktide

12) Twelve Minutes

13)Exomecha

14) Stalker 2

15) Lake

16) The Last Stop

17) Second Extinction

18)Call of the sea

That's 11 big games compared to a possible 4 or 5.

Granted the future looks different with Zenimax as they will have a larger output once the gen has hit it's stride, but by then Sony will have probably bolstered their teams too if they haven't already.

For the first time ever, MS and Sony will be in equal footing with teams and games output. It will be interesting to see if MS can keep up with 2-3 big game releases every year on gamepass day one.

Also, I love Sony are investing into big blockbusters. I haven't bought a state of the art console for indie games and or smaller games. Yes I love my Hotline Miami, Abzu etc but those are snacks. I want my big Wagyu of games that are filled with spectacle etc. That's why I bought my big TV, my soundbar and my new console.

As long as Sony continues to outsource these smaller games, everyone gets what they want.

The problem with making list wars when you're biased for one side, you tend to exclude games on the other.

Sony are a bit hit and miss to me.

Loved the PS1, but the PS2 didn't have the same magic for me. Loved the PS3, but the PS4 never quite grabbed me.

So far the PS5 has done nothing to pique my interest; it just feels like a continuation of the PS4, with no interesting new games. I'm open to changing my mind though and I will be keeping an eye on it, though at this point it's more likely I'll go with an Xbox Series X if and when I decide I need a new non-Nintendo system.

Keep in mind that your example also works the other way. If anything their were more people on the other side of that fence claiming how good Kojima is, and to only to start acting like his nothing special these days because he might be making a game on a platform they fanboy against.

I disagree, Sony can pretty much do both of those if they want.  Nothing is stopping them and they have the infrastructure to do it as well.  If anything, its probably more your first point that Kojima wanted something Sony was not willing to give up.  As the platform leader, they get kind of cocky at times.  Maybe Kojima wanted to keep the IP or something along those lines which we know MS is not as strict.

Well I think that's debatable. Sony very clearly doesn't do episodic games. If you're going to make the point that culture dictates that Sony aren't as willing to allow Kojima to retain IP rights, then the argument works for not willing to do episodic gaming either.

Siren, another horror game released episodically, clearly didn't inspire confidence in the model. We haven't really seen Sony pursue it since. Likewise, the newest Life is Strange is completely abandoning episodic releases, which leaves very few, if any, games doing this release format.

As for cloud infrastructure: I think PS's lack of ability to push it (or inability depending on how you look at it), speaks for itself. Sony aren't going to try get the infrastructure for a single game, unless it's their own studios pushing for it.

Naw, episodic games isn't the same as keeping an IP.  Even this article shows Sony isn't against such a model, the only reason you do not see Sony actually doing it yet is because they do not have any games in their pipeline designed for it yet.

PSNOW is already a cloud based infrastructure, do not let the term cloud confuse you on what they actually mean by that term.

The eternal E3 hat dude!

Dunno, PS4 was Sony's best time since the PS1, IMO.
Closing Japan Studios was a massive low blow tho, fuck them for that.

Really looking foward to PS5 games tho.

The thing is they didn`t closed it. They renamed it after team asobi and removed the third party supervision from Japan and put on central corporate.
