Forums - Gaming Discussion - console wars are getting nasty

Hey everyone. This thread isn't about if DF are or are not biased towards or against one console or another. Because that doesn't matter for this. It may matter if you decide, if you trust their technical analysis, but if you don't just stop listening to them. But that all doesn't excuse attacking them for this.

Nah, then it would just become Intel vs AMD or Nvidia vs AMD or whatnot. People will fall into tribes over anything they can find.

Three solutions
1. Don't visit Twitter
2. Only state the facts / measurements, leave the opinion and speculation out of it
3. Disable the comment section

However DF is being hypocrites here. They do it for the clicks. It doesn't matter which 'side' is ahead, bit of colorful language and speculation here and there and watch the clicks rolling in. If they would review it like rtings for example, 90% of his stuff would be gone and not directed at him.

I think we should lobby Rtings to get into gaming hardware reviews.  Hardware only though.

That would be useful. Of all the pissing matches so far, I've yet to read one thing on whether the system wide output gamma correction has finally left the XBox hardware. Or maybe it was fixed already. XBox One still had black crush due to the output gamma correction (to make everything pop more, darker, increased contrast) which made it a pain to use next to Nintendo and Sony who have always used a linear (correct) brightness scale. That was the reason for the ps3 vs 360, ps3 looks washed out vs 360 has black crush, limited vs full/expanded RGB problems. RTings would be perfect to test stuff like that.

I did the test myself back then between ps3 and 360 output, trying to calibrate the display as best as possible. PS3 top, Xbox 360 bottom, same png, simple greyscale 0,0,0 to 255,255,255 to 0,0,0 displayed on dash in full / expanded RGB output, screen also set to accept full / expanded RGB. Pictures taken with Nikon reflex camera with identical exposure time then edited beside each other.

As you can see, it was impossible to get the 360's output aligned with the display output. Either you have 127,127,127 at 50% brightness with either grey blacks or whiteouts (increase contrast to stretch the range), or what I settled for, have 127,127,127 below 50% and get 0,0,0 at the actual black level. However you still couldn't undo the 'crunch' at the bottom of the curve. It became more of a mess when developers started compensating for this gamma correction, so some games needed different calibration settings than others.

I assume this is not an issue with HDR, however plenty games are still in SDR. Plus it would be nice to see how these consoles handle video output in general.

To my knowledge, the only DF person who is obviously bias is Alex, but he isn't biased enough to justify the disgusting attacks. John (leans towards Playstation), Richard (leans towards Xbox) and Tom are fairly neutral afaik (they do make mistakes sometimes but don't we all?) It cracks me up that some of the same assholes who pretended to care about John's mental health a couple of week ago (defending him and DF from raging PS fanboys) are now demonizing him and getting a lot of support for it. Too many tweets from pricks with hundreds of likes, and VERY little opposition.

John needs to stay off social networks for a while. I probably wouldn't last long if I were in his position lol.

Well that's mainly because Alex is a PC guy, and well, DF hasn't had a PC guy since before he joined and the channel absolutely needed a PC guy to bring some sort of balance to the table. Before Alex, all we got was a slight side by side from richard. We got no "optimised settings" or actual talk of what PC settings do what and how specifically PC type tech looks and works, so I think having Alex makes DF better than it was previously.

Also, Alex just likes good PC tech and hw, and well, why wouldn't anyone?, everyone wants the latest or hottest new thing (*nudge, nudge* the brand spanking new current gen systems *wink, nudge*). He's allowed to dabble in what he loves and I don't know why he'd have to adhere to what Richard and the other two do in terms of console only talk. That's why they hired him for PC in the first place, because that area was sorely lacking.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

Not really. the war between intel/AMD/Nvidia is still a far, far smaller war than console wars, which have spanned decades longer and permeate throughout many an internet forum than GPU/CPU wars. I see more console warring on all forms of media than I do some rich fuck with money to burn on a GPU/CPU.

By the numbers game, you'd still be better off on the PC side of things. For one you actually have modders to help you out, for another, you've less people to see warring over crap.

Quite often the 30 year olds droning on about it have their youtube channel/businesses geared to benefit from the predictable crowds of kids. There's a lot of traffic, and a lot of channel growth in it. To capture the most traffic, you show your purity in your tribal group - you bash the other platform harder than your competitors. Repeat to the extent that platform choice becomes a character defect of anyone who chooses differently.

I remember 'my' console war of PS3 vs 360 at school in like 2007, the motivation at least made sense. I was trying to convince my friends to pick my platform so we could play together. This just seems bizarre.

If anyone has read Jonathan Haidt's "The Righteous Mind" the psychology of tribalism will be familiar. But fundamentally the human mind doesn't have "politics" and "not politics" as fundamental categories of thought. We're chimpanzees with big ideas, and once we get the sense that we belong to a tribe, we're geared to treat insiders and outsiders differently, as in politics as in console wars, our minds make no distinction. This article I read a few weeks ago was quite fun https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1047840X.2020.1721233

Yeah, but if it would be all the console fanboys moving over to PC, the war would surely follow and just take on a new form. An existing, minor chip war just waiting to be escalated.
