Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo quarterly sales update (Switch 61.44m, Animal Crossing 22.4m)

Quick note at the current rate 100m could be reached come the end of next FY.

This is absolute madness.

40 Million+ lifetime may not be out of the question lol.

The Switch is on fire! Maybe it could even outsell the Nintendo 64!

In case no one has said this yet, 428% surge in profits.

Wii sold 25.95m during it's peak fiscal year.  After that it sold another 51.25m.  This is Switch's peak fiscal year and 25.95m is a pretty decent estimate.  If Switch sells this and has the same decline as the Wii, then lifetime sales end up at 132.98m.  That is what a "crash and burn" scenario looks like for the Switch.  People are thinking crash and burn is like 100m-110m.  No, crash and burn is 133m.  Wii had weak first party games and weak third party games (other than Just Dance) after 2009.  And if Switch fizzles out, then yeah it will sell 133m.  That is a pessimistic number that is feasible.

On the other hand, the likelyhood of Switch going to a crash and burn scenario is small.  Wii had no Pokemon games, which Switch will likely get 2 more (a port and a new one).  BotW2 is going to be far more popular than Skyward Sword, and Nintendo is going to keep a steady flow of games on the Switch until it's ready to replace it.  Western Devs are going to keep porting PS4 games over, because that is easy money.  Japanese devs are just getting started putting brand new 3rd party games on Switch.  It is far more likely that Switch will not crash and burn.

It is far more likely that Switch will sell a lot more than that 133m crash and burn scenario.

Wii had 3 Pokemon spin-off games.

You know what he meant. Main Pokémon titles sell absurd numbers and move tons of consoles. Spin offs are not even close to that.

Mario Galaxy 2, weak? Donkey Kong Country Returns? Wii Party?

The quote is out of context.  I was talking about hardware sales.  The games that really moved Wii harware all sold 20m+ and they all released 2009 or earlier.  None of the games you mentioned even broke 10m.  Switch will likely get 2 more Pokemon games, and Pokemon tends to sell in the 15-20m range.  BotW2 will likely also sell 10m+. Switch still has several guaranteed heavy hitters coming, each of which will sell more than Wii Party.

Weird, No More Heroes III does not appear on their upcoming games list (last page) under either Nintendo or other publishers

Just based off what we have now, I think the bare minimum of Switch software sales should be as estimated below:

One or two (1-2) 50 million sellers???:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Two (2) 40 million sellers:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Four (4) 30 million sellers:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Seven (7) 20 million sellers
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Confirmed)
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Confirmed)
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Confirmed)
- Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Pokemon Sword/Shield
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Super Mario Party

Eleven (11) 10 million sellers
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Confirmed)
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Confirmed)
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Confirmed)
- Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Confirmed)
- Pokemon Sword/Shield (Confirmed)
- Super Mario Odyssey (Confirmed)
- Pokemon Let's Go (Confirmed)
- Super Mario Party (Confirmed)
- Splatoon 2 (Confirmed)
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Ring Fit Adventure

And there are plenty of other unreleased games that could hit any of these marks: Breath of the Wild 2, Pokemon Gen 9, a new 3D Mario game or that rumored 3D Mario collection.
As well as other games that weren't listed in this latest Earnings Release that will get there: Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Maker 2.

Hardware is one thing; But the potential for software sales for the Switch is... limitless.

No, he shouldn't. That would only legitimize the nitpicking person who is pretending to not understand the statatement.
