Forums - Sony - PS5 could see even more 3rd party exclusives than PS4

Whether you feel they're a good thing or not isn't the point. They'll never truly go away so long as money talks.

Wow, so you think it‘s a good thing that Sony is paying Square-Enix, Atlus and others for exclusivity?

I wouldn't assume all exclusivity equates to money hatting (I.e persona) although you have obvious cases like FFVIIR and recently on Xbox Phantasy Star Online 2. But sometimes developers see their audience primarily on one system so are not interested in developing multiplat which does cost more money and effort.

OP: Unless developers are making unique use of Playstation hardware there is no need for 3rd party exclusives. We will still see Japanese ones, not from money hatting but from a presumed pack of interest on Xbox side. Indie games which need help funding are an exception

I still remember all the backlash MS took for moneyhatting Tomb Raider. Funny how it's basically non-existent when Sony continuously does it over and over.

3rd party exclusives is matter of deal , xbox can do to and Nintendo also can do the same.

Hell even Stadia can do the same. But don't expect to be fully exclusives . Also Sony already has a lot of brand recognition , no need to poach developer and publisher. But exclusives content might still exist and time exclusives will still exist. Perhaps it will not be games exclusives but more of one games will look particular better on one platform than the rest (PS5 faster IO/SSD) will result of fast travel, flying mechanic, high quality polygon, no pop up on open world environment.

Spider-Man and Resogun are first party BTW. But yes, I am including Console exclusivity in this.

Spiderman was released in 2018, the delevopers were still third party, they even released sunset overide on xbox one as an exclusive as well as song of the deep for ps4 and xbox one in 2016, but they were purchased by sony in 2019 and became  first party

Resogun is third party, the developers is housemarque, not owned by sony

Sony published both titles though, so they're first party.

I also remember when they secured the 2nd game in a trilogy as 'exclusive' even after the PS3 version of the 1st game outsold the 360 version, and the remaster on PS4 outsold the X1 version.

That;s why there was such a backlash, the IP and major audience were not with MS.

That's probably why Dead Rising 3 received a lot less backlash when Microsoft nabbed that. At least DR got its start on Xbox.

the term says all, third party developer, never mentioned anything about publishing, kojima productions, same again, totally independent developer

Sure, the developer is independent, but the game belongs to Sony. That's why its considered first party, Sony produced it and published it.

The XBox SX is basically the same hardware, just with better GPU performance. So there's really zero point to skipping other platforms. If developers like PS5, they will like XSX, maybe even moreso.

Devs are not going to lock themselves out of the XB + PC market for a SSD issue, so the XBox SX SSD if anything will become their standard usage spec.

If Sony outsells Xbox AGAIN, then there might very well be a reason.

There still isn't, you're throwing sales down the toilet for no good reason. Unless Sony is reimbursing you for every lost sale, there is no real benefit.

Plus making an XBox version means you're making it on a Windows based dev kit, which basically gives you a "free" PC version of the game, and combined with XBox, there are tens of millions more PC owners.

Then there's also Switch 2 that's likely going to factor into the equation eventually, devs were caught off guard with the first Switch, but now they now the Switch brand is legit and if things like DLSS are implimented into the Switch 2, porting suddenly becomes easier.

It's simply not going to be as worth it to lock yourself into exclusivity deals.
