Forums - Sony - Do you think the PS5 will be a VR only console?

Psvr is dead

Oculus rift is dead

htc vive is dead

So why would Sony make a ps5 vr only console? Psvr has sold about 2 million units and has about 50% of the high end market. Playstation vita had about 15 million sales and is called a big flop. That must make Psvr a double flop and Oculus rift and htc vive even worse.

VR is dead because the market is just to small and will never be succesful intill VR can be a stand-alone product. Even as stand-alone product it will probably fail as VR is just clumsy to use.

After Black Friday PS4 was back to 299,- officially, mostly sold around 249,-. PSVR 199,- deal was over as well. Pro sold for 349,- during BF even less (349,- with 50 dollar gift card), so there were deals indeed.

As habam has already stated, during BF week the Skyrim PSVR outsold both Pro and X1X at Amazon for several days.

Im just having a problem that you’re trying to downplay PSVR sales by comparing them to PS4 Pro sales. Compare them with the VR competitors instead. A Pro is a wise choice for everyone getting into the PS ecosystem. A PSVR is an expensive peripheral, a unique gaming system which needs dedicated games for the most part AND an existing PlayStation console, in best case even a Pro. That’s a much smaller potential field of buyers.

So the week when the PSVR was the cheapest it ever was it outsold the PS4 Pro that wasn't on sale anywhere?!? Incredible!

Do you realize how bad the optics would be if it didn't outsell the PS4 Pro at half the price, when it was being advertised and pushed as heavily as Sony pushed it during the holidays?

So let's be clear, you think if someone has $400 to spend on video game hardware, and they have two choices -The PSVR and PS4 priced at $399 and the PS4 Pro at $399, and you think the PS4/PSVR combo is a harder sell? If that's what you believe you have even less faith in PSVR than I do, and you can't possibly believe is anywhere close to mainstream.

Don't get me wrong. PSVR Sales are mediocre. But, so are PS4 Pro sales. Both products are still trying to justify their very existence, but here you are treating PSVR like it's so mainstream that it's even reasonable to consider the idea that every PS5 might come shipped with a VR headset because everyone everyone loves VR so much, everyone would be willing to pay hundreds extra for it. But today, in 2018, apparently it's unreasonable to expect the PSVR to outsell the PS4 Pro, even when there's 75 million PS4s already sold.

You’re putting words into my mouth (like it’s so mainstream) and are still using exaggerated numbers. That’s not how I’m going to continue discussing with you. It’s become clear what your agenda is. Farewell.

The pro has zero exclusive games. In fact, Sony won't allow anyone to make any game exclusively for the PS4 Pro at this time. Meanwhile, the PSVR has dozens of exclusive games like R.I.G.S., which Sony gave away to all PS+ subscribers.

Like I said, we know the PS4 Pro sold *at least* 2 million by June 2017.

PS4 Pro vs PSVR is a completely fair comparison. They're both new Playstation products. They both enhance the Playstation gaming experience. They were both released at about the same time. They're both completely optional from the core PS4 experience. Yet, one has been more expensive since its announcement, has never dropped in price, and has sold more.

I can guarantee you if PSVR was outselling PS4 Pro you would have mentioned it in this thread as evidence to the popularity of it.

VR is not a completely new medium. I can remember playing Duke Nukem 3D VR at a theme park in the 90's. Just because Sony decided to wade into the VR waters doesn't make the experience new.

The Pro is a 100 $ upgrade to the normale PS4 which doesnt require it. Other then more performance it still offers a larger HDD. it still just sold 20% of the PS4s which is incredible bad.

The PSVR, even during its sale, was still a 200$ upgrade which requires a PS4 or PS4 pro to run at all.

I had actually expected the pro to sell much better. just 20% for all it does for just 100$ definitly shows the market isnt ready for more powerfull consoles but just want cheaper consoles.

The market so far doesnt seem VR ready either yet though,  we will see if that changes or not.

The Pro is selling exactly as was to be expected for an iterative console mainly intended for 4K users. Price will always be king.

I guess that’s why both CES and GDC were full of VR lately. But yeah...Trump style I guess.

I have absolutely no interest in VR but I am interested in a PS5 so I hope not lol

Nope, I don't think that Sony will ever make a VR-only console. Besides that, VR is still at a very early stage in it's life as of now imo.

If that happens it is a NO buy

No no

It better fucking not be! Would be the worst console of all time if that happened!

but who should be interested in playing games on a tv anymore as soon as todays problems with vr are sorted out?

People with various eye-problems that makes VR impossible to use

I certainly hope it's not. I have no interest in playing games with a useless box tied to my head. Not exactly my idea of a relaxing or fun way to spend time. I don't really see any reason why they would do that anyway.

Sure, if Sony wants to shrink the Playstation userbase to 10%, they'll do that. I think PS5 surely will support PSVR2, but no way that is the only way and it will not even bundled, because it would drive the price too much.
