Nah, it was other way around - you didn't understand the people.

The tablet controller should have been borne from a brilliant game idea like analogue controls or polygonal worlds were. Instead, they made something hoping that they could find a clever use for it. It's taken Miyamoto (one of the world's most creative developers) until this year to come up with something truly fresh (Starfox). And even that's a hard sell because it looks like a PS2 game running in HD because Nintendo cheaped out on the hardware.

That is so eloquently put, and I agree.
You just won this thread, with this post.

I just want to see nintendo do the "safe" and normal thing for once, and see where that gets them.

Like they did with Gamecube?
But the Gamepad is the only reason (Other than Nintendo games obviously) to buy Wii U IMO. Without the Gamepad, what's the point to buy a console who is weaker than its competitor.
A handheld gamer only (for now).

| BraLoD said: That's a decent answer, even as it was way more because of the lack of 3rd party. They focused more then needed on the tablet and didn't grap the need to get a stronger platform, they were really trying to do a Wii 2, but casuals moved to mobile platforms. I really hope he understands it, because if they go with a Wii 3 and again trying to get the casuals, it'll be very risk. The Wii sucess was more of a out of the curve thing, it's not easy or wise to hope for it as a base. Now, if they can they should try to throw two consoles quickly as the Wii U, one 2016 and another 2020. That way they have a better chance to compete with the others now for a short time and aafter for a long time. They really should be thinking ahead of the next console already so they can grant 3rd party back. |
The casuals where FORCED away by nintendo. They didnt all just up and leave for mobile.
Wii launch price = 249$
Wii U launch price = 299$ / 349$ (depend on delux or not version)
The Wii motes (nunchucks) that the casuals loved, where replaced by a gamepad.
I truly hate how arrogant Nintendo has become. From Reggie saying VR is unfun and anti-social while ignoring the wii u gamepad, to Iwata saying he knows they messed up e3 but will only try to make the next one better, to Miyamoto claiming he knows absolutely why the wii u failed.
The gamepad did have potential regardless of how other tablets worked. But when Ubisoft is the only developer making gamepad centric games (Zombiu and rayman legends), you start to wonder if Nintendo was even interested in the gamepad, and was just hoping to create another cash cow fad.
The reason the wii u failed is because it is simply a cash grab at what the wii was. There was absolutely no ambition gameplay-wise like the wii or development-wise like the ps4. It is so obvious that they were trying to make another 'wii fad' that they couldn't even make a proper name for the console. The ps4 on the other hand, was ambitiously made for developers to have all the tools they needed to make to make amzing games in short times. It's really telling when guerilla games is making 2 AAA ps4 titles in the time it takes monolift soft to make 1 semi decent open world wii u game.

You mean those lovely small Mini Discs that limted how big games could be on the consol?
Even that "normal" gen, nintendo made questionable design choices.
But yes... I want to see Nintendo do a Gamecube 2.0 thats equal to a xbox in performance.
Either they do that, or the launch a Wii 2 (with the nunchucks & motion games) that made casuals buy it.

Because they think they can't sell console without gimmick. They learn from gamecube lesson lol.

That and Call of Duty has taken them away (the casuals who hadn't already jumped ship for mobile) from the wii and into hd consoles, to which the ps4 picked up successfully.
