Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto Expains Why Wii U has Failed

When did they decide to include a tablet? Tablets had been mainstream for quite a few years before Wii U, so why did they think they had a unique proposition. He is right about it being a white elephants, but how we're they so unaware?

I'm thinking here, didn't the Wii U put Nintendo in a sort of vicious cycle? It's basically one gen behind PS4/One. NX or whatever will be released in the middle of the gen, so they can catch up, but by then, Sony and MS already have strong installed bases... rinse and repeat.

What can they do to stay competitive in the home console market? I really hope they come up with something, having three equally strong console manufacturers would be great.

actually that 'circle' would have occured with the Wii, which was probably futher behind the 360 / PS3 that the Wii U is its competitors

Nintendo could easily have a home console as strong as its competitors spec wise if they WANT to its simply a decision they'll have to make- prioritize a new fun idea or prioritize specs. they can do whatever they want, nothing is stopping them from producing a higher spec system especially when their competitors already are making architectures that are no secret and match one another fairly closely

also bear in mind that Nintendo still is up there with its competitors overall because of the DS. they are probably considerably ahead of Microsoft in terms of game sales when you combine the DS and Wii U

if Nintendo is really connected their home console and handheld next generation then they will have no problem achieving great sales. all of the people who automatically already buy the Nintendo handheld will be shoe ins for the combo system and those casuals who otherwise might not be sure will be drawn to the multi system games

Nintendo has a histroy of makeing really weird choices with hardware.

Most people would probably say "how could they not have seen this?"

But its always easy to say after the fact.

That however doesnt change the fact that they are very bad at predicting what the future holds, and they love to gamble... which usually just hurts them.

They should replace the people in charge, and hire some more tallent hardware guys, and allow them to make the choices needed.

Tablets are great, had ipads which have some very good games. But trying to make a tablet an actual controller at the same time, was pretty stupid. Also tablets have been on the decline for a while now and they are used for many different things. Point is, tablets were never meant for gaming as a primary function.

Problem is.....Gamepad is NOT a tablet. And Wii U's biggest problem has remained NOT the controller, but horrible advertising in NA, and not pushing the console the right way, which led to third party game drought. As well as Nintendo themselves mishandling their own development allocation, so that they have been consistently late on their own Wii U titles at times. Wii U could have been a huge success, and for the most part, in spite a lack of retail games, I personally still really enjoy it. But they definitely dropped the ball.

It can STILL turn around a bit. But there's no way at this point it's not going to probably come in "third place", sadly. The thing needs a 2015 price drop though, for real.

Good response. I was expecting more Reggie esque BS, but that was a very logical explanation as to one of the reasons it failed.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Wiiu had some t3rd party support early on, lack of software is much nintendos own fault.

Of coarse it is.. It's there fault for mistakenly thinking that they should release this type of console at this time.   They should have recognized also that that Wii mainstream audience was gone for good and not built a system which accomodated for the audience in any way shape or form. But I certainly wouldn't fault Nintendo for first party software which has been stellar on Wiiu.
