I'm thinking here, didn't the Wii U put Nintendo in a sort of vicious cycle? It's basically one gen behind PS4/One. NX or whatever will be released in the middle of the gen, so they can catch up, but by then, Sony and MS already have strong installed bases... rinse and repeat.

What can they do to stay competitive in the home console market? I really hope they come up with something, having three equally strong console manufacturers would be great.

actually that 'circle' would have occured with the Wii, which was probably futher behind the 360 / PS3 that the Wii U is its competitors

Nintendo could easily have a home console as strong as its competitors spec wise if they WANT to its simply a decision they'll have to make- prioritize a new fun idea or prioritize specs. they can do whatever they want, nothing is stopping them from producing a higher spec system especially when their competitors already are making architectures that are no secret and match one another fairly closely

also bear in mind that Nintendo still is up there with its competitors overall because of the DS. they are probably considerably ahead of Microsoft in terms of game sales when you combine the DS and Wii U

if Nintendo is really connected their home console and handheld next generation then they will have no problem achieving great sales. all of the people who automatically already buy the Nintendo handheld will be shoe ins for the combo system and those casuals who otherwise might not be sure will be drawn to the multi system games
