It's not just gamers doing that. They might be more vocal or passionate about it, but essentially that midset of hating on popular things is not exclusive to gaming. Think of Harry Potter, Frozen or Twilight, for book/movie franchises. The same can be found with music, food, and basically very other aspect of life.
Sometimes a lot of people might just derive enjoyment from something that you genuinely think is bad, and poorly put toghether (this is the case with me and twilight for example, i just don't like it.) Sometimes there might be other factors at play.
I think the assumption that something that appeals to millions of people, only appeals to the lowest common denominator is quickly made, especially if you yourself have only heard of (and been annoyed by) the hype and have not actually seen the product. Also there's always going to be diffrent tastes and just because a lot of people like somesting that does not mean there isn't either a vocal minority disliking it or even a huge potion of people feeling lukewarm towards it at best.
Lasty, whether we like to admit it or not, we all like to belong somewhere, into some movement with likeminded people. We also want to feel special and unique. Siding against the popular thing with a smaller group of people gives social stability while still enabling every member of the smaller group to feel unique and special, after all they all hate the popular thing.
So there you have my psychology-101 analysis, of why we like to hate on popular things.
