Because a niche hobby which was good the way it was gets destroyed by stuff that mainstreamers (who think they are gamers/part of the original group) like.
Then the developers that usualy made stuff for the niche fans betray the original group and also do more and more stuff that the mainstreamers like (that sadly outnumber the original group) and the hobby gets destroyed more and more. The devs sometimes do this on purpose because of $$$ or because they dont know that there is different groups of "gamers".
This happened to alot of hobbies groups etc. music genres fucked up. Movies turned into MichaelBay-Fireworks even social groups be it Nazis or Emos or Hipsters or Punks or Metalheads(sry if this is offensive I have no idea how to call them I will change as soon you guys give me a better word) hate that pseudo-members of their group hijack the group when it gets more and more popular and one day the opportunists outnumber the origianl peopl. Even 4chan has this "oldfag vs newfag".
The original "message" is completely lost or is deformed so bad it loses its meaning and then the original group has to deal with that crap forever or is left with the debris when being part of that group is not "IN" anymore and the "opportunists" moved on to be part of something else.
You can losely compare that to "hey cool I am a proud INSERT COUNTRY-citizen because my country is cool etc and then somehow alot of outsiders came to the country it gets more and more fucked up and then everything our predecessors build turns into shit." So basically the "native vs immigrants" thing.
I mean I dont hear the majority or gamers hate GTA as much as COD simply because GTA kinda deserves its success. And is not just a marketing monster. Its a well build well planned game that is in development for a very long long time and you can feel it. It has its flaws but the whole experience is great. Even successful games like the NSMB series get hate because after the 4th game with the same music with the same stock photoshop effects with the same "you name it" deserve the hate because they are lazy.
But because lazy effort products sell well (often thanks to marketing) this signals that lazy can mean successful.
That everything needs to be streamlined and that things need to be changed so that the mainstream group likes it (Dante I am talking about your hair!).
