I've seen that with other mediums as well. You tend to see a lot more hate for popular things.
This is simple statistics really. If something is popular, just by that definition more people will know about it and thus there will be more haters (because there'll always be those who dislike something no matter how good it is). It just so happens that haters tend to be more vocal since the people who are enjoying it are probably just enjoying playing the game, unlike haters who don't want to play the game but at the same time want to hate on it, and hence spend their time talking more about it.
