Forums - Gaming - Was MGS4 severely overated??

Yeah, it was over rated. It barely felt like a game sometimes. You just ran from cutscene to cutscene.

In regards to gameplay, its arguably the worst. Good story, but that doesn't make it a good game.

The ending was garbage, everything else was great 9/10

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Absolutely not. In my humble opinion it's the greatest game of all time. However, I'm a diehard Metal Gear Solid fan, so take from that what you will.

Yes. It was one of the worst games I played last gen. Even some of my die hard MGS fan friends think the game sucks now. It was all fanservice for all its 10 hours of cutscenes, with barely 5 hours of actual gameplay, most of which was utter crap.

It was a far cry from MGS 3 and the ridiculous amount of 10/10 reviews probably came from the fact that it was the PS3's first AAA game.

It was no suprise to see the MGS4 not even make the IGN top 100 list.  http://uk.ign.com/top/modern-games/1

I really agree with you. The mystery of the metal gear series was lost with this entry. It was just fanservice nonsense.

I did feel this way actually. The game seemed to funnel you to your destination with no exploration, multiple routes, interesting things to discover etc. Even the environments felt foreign because they were so quickly discarded. It just felt like "you are here, get to location X" with some enemies scattered about, the occasional boss fight, lots of cut scenes and the odd shoot out.

Thats what I missed the most. I was entranced by the villans of MGS3, easily the most ingruiging set of bosses in any video game, even from a gameplay standpoint it was revolutionary in which most of them had to be dispatched. The B&B unit was an utterly lame and lazy throwback to MGS1. Any interest (albiet limited) I had in the seried died with MGS4.

MGS4 is a great game, and many others agree.

At least the bosses in MGS1 had unique personalities and attributes. They were fairly fleshed out for bosses. The bosses in MGS4 had no substance or personalities whatsoever.

Which goes back to the first point, it was fanservice nonsense.
