Forums - Gaming - Was MGS4 severely overated??

I get all that. At the time I remember loving the story and emotion but felt that the gameplay was nothing special really. I liked the new camera and controls but felt like the gameplay was not really great.

That's kinda why it's not my favorite MGS. It's good as concluding chapter for the story, but the environment wasn't perfect for a stealth game imo. I didn't like the sense of urgency the story and battle arenas made me feel as opposed to MGS3. I really liked the Shadow Mosses level because it was fun, calm and tightly designed. When was the last time you played the game?

2011 I believe. I tried going in full stealth but kept getting caught lol.  The return to Shadow Moses resonated so much though especially with Snake having flashbacks like "a surveillance camera?? and everything is weathered. When "The best has yet to come" plays it did hit me.

Not to me, i thought it was the best entry in the series ^^ (though relative to the time of their release i'd say MGS3 was better). It's among my all-time favorite PS3 games.

Not at all, the game offered a lot of content and secrets, mgs4 lacked maybe virtual missions

Ahhh... Ghost running MGS4 was the most fun I've ever had with the game. That's how it should be played imo. It can only be done if you had experience of course. I grew up with the series so I had to endure. You have to save and quiet each time you get caught before leaving the area. That's how saving works after all. Nothing you do in each area is recorded unless you enter a new one.

I still have a copy so I might go back to it one day, it still holds up very well visually. I do think MGS5 is a return to form. Shame that Hideo probably won't have a hand in the future of the series. It really won't be Metal Gear anymore.

OP translation: "after so many years, fanboys surely must not be playing the 'zomg exclusive' overrating game. Now that people have returned to their sense, doesn't everyone agree with my clearly 'ahead of it's time' objectivity that MGS4 is not that good of a game?"

No.
You're just another guy who downplayed and continues to downplay, just like people are doing with bloodborne now and will do for years to come.

I'll take a Metal Gear without Kojima with two grains of salt. The series goes through a full circle with The Phantom Pain as far as I'm concerned.

I will say no it was not overrated. It was the best game out at the time it released IMO. Very good story and gameplay. Even though I still feel MGS3 was the best in the series and was under rated personally.

I was disappointed by it from get-go. The octo-camouflage wasn't a good idea, some cutscenes do drag on but the part that I was the most let down by was the boss fights and the bosses themselves.

After iconic bosses like Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven, Fortune, The End, The Boss, etc... the Beauties are utterly disappointing and unoriginal. It doesn't help that you get their back story AFTER you kill them via a codec conversation with Drebin.

There's other annoyances too like that damn monkey on roller skates and Noami no longer having a sexy British accent. Also I wasn't a fan of the final fist fight with Revolver and the button mashing microwave corridor.

I agree with everything except the final fight. I thought it was one of the best in the series. It was so emotional and nostalgic. Which admittedly is one of the biggest issues in the game. It relies way too much on nostalgia. I don't expect many non MGS fans to find it as amazing as MGS fans found it.

That being said it still has the best gameplay in the series. Best camera, best aiming, best shooting and pretty much best everything to do with controls.
