Nintendo could NOT have turned around the Wii U like Sony did with the PS3.

a) The hype for the PS3 was huge anyway, it was the price that killed it. Once Sony did the rebranding in 2009 and had a decent price, it made its appropriate comeback. The Wii U could be $99 and no one would buy it still.

b) Third party support. Nuff said. Sony had it, Nintendo doesn't.

c) The PS3 sold well after its atrocious first year. PS3 sold MORE in 1 year DESPITE $599, losing exclusives, no rumble, no first party games, mediocre second party games, inferior multiplats, etc. etc. what the Wii U has sold in TOTAL.

I think they could have turned it around enough to sell roughly 40mil lifetime. Also, how to you think Sony got the third party support? They made first party games in the genres they were chasing in order to prove that those types of games sold (action adventure, racing, FPS etc) and I'd bet they paid for the content.

Nintendo did neither of those things. They're too arrogant and tight-assed and it will be their downfall. They may make it big with the casuals once the crack the mobile market, but their 5 million or so core fans that are left are diminishing fast because we are losing faith in their ability to support their products.

This, Nintendo should have expanded their appeal and made stuff like Uncharted or Skyrim for Wii U, instead they gave us Tropical Freeze and Mario 3DS World.

After the way they are being treated on Wii U I can see even core fans being reluctant to buy Ninty's next system. Speaking as a longtime fan, I know I am.

It's hard to make games nowadays. Nintendo is a relatively small company, only about 5000 employees total (that includes all admin/support/R&D/PR staff, not just game developers).

Even Activision has 7000+ employees.

The reason Nintendo fans are pissed off is reality sinks in when you're not getting games at a regular clip.

Nintendo can't support two distinct hardware platforms any more. It worked during the N64-GBC days because N64 games could be made with 20-30 people and GB games were either just low budget Pokemon games or SNES downports.

It worked OK even up until the Wii-DS era, where DS started to get treated more like a main event console then just a little brother companion system to the main console. But even here, Nintendo sorta cheated by basically re-using the GameCube chip and DS budgets/staff sizes could be still be kept small. Even then, cracks started showing towards the end of that gen where neither the DS or Wii were well supported through 2011-12.

Now with the 3DS and Wii U both being large hardware steps above ... the whole formula has collapsed onto itself. Neither Wii U or 3DS fans are very happy right now.

To any rational person it's fairly obvious the Wii U was going to be a "failed" console from a marketing/sales perspective for at least a year now.

So it's not like this is anything new.

That doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the games. I'm looking forward to Splatoon and Xenoblade X as much as any game this year and yes as much as Zelda. And shit a new Star Fox too.

They could have done what was necessary at any time. They chose to let it die.

Unless they could triple the horsepower of the Wii U magically through osmosis ... no they couldn't do what was neccessary. PS3 as bumbled as it was early was still future proofed from before its release to be able to provide next-gen games for a 5-7 year period.

All Sony had to do was bring the price down over time and they would eventually start gaining traction again.

The Wii U was Nintendo simply betting the farm on the Wii formula again (last gen graphics slightly souped up + gimmick controller). Once the formula failed though they really had no recourse. Third parties who were busy transitioning to the PS4/X1 hardware spec weren't going to support a gimmick based Nintendo that would require a seperate game engine without the 100 million userbase fad/craze to go with it.

So basically they were stuck up shit creek without a paddle and no help coming.

So you are actually serious?

Yes, Sony got third party support by paying for selected content during the PS1 and PS2 days (we are talking about exclusivity here), but since we are talking about the PS3 specifically, they already had all third party support guaranteed due to the dominance of the PS2. Regarding first party content, it's actually the other way around: It was shaped based on the third party software that sold (Tomb Raider, Ridge Racer and Medal of Honor etc.). Because third parties had already all these PS3 games in development, Sony didn't have to pay for anything other than maintaining exclusivity; which they didn't, so a lot of games became multiplatform (Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4, Final Fantasy XIII, just to name a few). Third parties had invested so much in the PS3 before launch that turning back wasn't even considered as an option, otherwise they would have started to put good games on the bestselling console; and we know they didn't.

The conditions were entirely different for the Wii U where third parties had already written off the system before it launched. 75+% of 360/PS3 multiplatform games scheduled for late 2012 or 2013 weren't even planned to come to the Wii U. Whereas for the PS3 Sony had to do nothing to get all the games, Nintendo would have had to pay hand over fist to get some ports. When you consider how insignificant multiplatform releases have been for Nintendo hardware sales historically, it's easy to understand why Nintendo wasn't willing to fork over cash. Sony and Microsoft don't pay either for games that they don't believe will move hardware.

I am serious. Seriously disappointed in Nintendo for not doing what was necessary to keep their reputation intact among the core gamers for the last few generations. If they had, third parties would be lining up to develop for Nintendo's consoles like they were for Sony with the PS3.

And come on...really? Sony had Uncharted, Resistance, GT etc in development long before the launch of the PS3. They knew the market they were going after and they wanted to support the belief that those types of games would sell on their machine. They didn't know the PS3 was going to flounder like it did, but they had the good sense to prove that those types of games were viable regardless. And like I said, I'll bet that some money exchanged hands too. Of course it would cost Nintendo a lot more because of the situation they're in, but that's Nintendo's fault for not playing the game the last few generations.

Another Sony making up some bullshit in order to troll the Wii U? How ironic how your sig says "PS4" when the PS4 has only one good game. Handful of games isn't enough and yet one game is good for you? Fuck off you lying troll.

Funny considering the PS4 has the largest game library out of all the 8th generation consoles despite being on the market a whole year less than the Wii U.

PS4 has more games, yes.

But he wasn't claiming wii u has more games. He claimed wii u has better games, and though this might change in the future, I say he is absolutely right.

That's totally fine, but also subjective. You can think the Wii U has the best games out whilst I can think the Atari Jaguar has the best games out. Neither of us are wrong because it is due to personal preference. Much like the troll saying the PS4 only has one good game, I can say it has 20 good games.

Nintendo creates a console for the core gamers (Wii U). Now that Nintendo is losing money because the console was a commercial failure they should spend more money to support the core gamers that ditched it in the first place. That way, the core gamers will be more willing to buy their next console.

Agreed.

"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"

Of all the nonsensical comments I've seen from gamers regarding how Nintendo should run their businnes, moneyhatting games would likely be one of the worse, if not THE worst one.

In regards to 'leaving Wii U to die', it was already dead, or rather comatose a long time ago.  I'm not sure why a Zelda delay would suddenly make people scream"ZOMG DOOMED" when there are a bunch of other games coming out this year along with unannounced projects that they said.

I'm still not even sure why people are surprised that Zelda got delayed, as if the news is somehow a grand statement on the Wii u all of a sudden.  I guess you can eblieve that Nintendo did in fact see how various gameplay changes could be made and delayed it to pursue that(and if it's one company that has the balls to go chasing after gameplay ideas its likely Nintendo) or be a cynic and think they couldn't have possibly brought it out in time and it just got delayed, like every other major game this gen.

But nope, let that vitriol and hate burn.

I'm not sure what they'll have for their holidays though, they'll need something just as big.  Conidering they wont even show Zelda at E3 either, I do wonder if they do have something big indeed planned.  Something that's a big seller for the holidays.  If it is, I expect something Animal Crossing or Pokemon related, as there is no big holiday seller for Wii U either so they need to secure one really big or a few big releases.

lineup so far
Xenoblade - Summer likely
Splatoon - Summer likely
Fatal Frame - Fall likely
Devil's Third - Fall or Winter likely or delay
Mario Maker - Fall or Winter, but I'd go with Winter but not exactly holidays
Yoshi - no idea, haven't kept up with it
Starfox _ I smell delay but StarFox games are pretty short and aren't exactly an epic endeavour and this one will most likely be episodic- so fall or winter with no multiplayer lol
Projects Cars - LMAO

there's Project Giant Robo and Project Guard but I have no idea how those will take shape.  Probably be rolledinto Starfox somehow, or repurposed as some minigame or slapped with Mario or some other franchise character name on  them.

That's about all the 'big' Wii U games for the rest of the year iirc.

Animal Crossing, Pokken, Paper Mario 5 or Metroid would be good contenders for holiday release.

I sold my WiiU when I got the PS4. And to be honest, I didn´t miss it one single day. I played the Mario, 101, ... games, but, when they gave us WindwakerHD I was so pissed. I wanted a new Zelda, and they made me wait until 2016 now. And, if I sticked to WiiU, I would have missed all the great things like GTA, Last of Us and now Bloodborne...I was a little sad because of MarioKart, but, to be honest, I have 5 different versions at home (don´t recall now which on I missed), and I will survive this.
Maybe, when ZeldaU is a big hit, I get another WiiU on the used-market, but only if it is 150€ or less.

To answer your question: Yes it is dying, and noone cares anymore. The world has changed. Mario and Zelda don´t interest me anymore, sorry.

Isn't there enough nintendoom threads already?
