It's hard to make games nowadays. Nintendo is a relatively small company, only about 5000 employees total (that includes all admin/support/R&D/PR staff, not just game developers).
Even Activision has 7000+ employees.
The reason Nintendo fans are pissed off is reality sinks in when you're not getting games at a regular clip.
Nintendo can't support two distinct hardware platforms any more. It worked during the N64-GBC days because N64 games could be made with 20-30 people and GB games were either just low budget Pokemon games or SNES downports.
It worked OK even up until the Wii-DS era, where DS started to get treated more like a main event console then just a little brother companion system to the main console. But even here, Nintendo sorta cheated by basically re-using the GameCube chip and DS budgets/staff sizes could be still be kept small. Even then, cracks started showing towards the end of that gen where neither the DS or Wii were well supported through 2011-12.
Now with the 3DS and Wii U both being large hardware steps above ... the whole formula has collapsed onto itself. Neither Wii U or 3DS fans are very happy right now.
